WSU03MemberThis is our first Christmas in WS and we were wondering where the best tree lots are…any recommendations?
November 30, 2008 at 5:43 am #648342
WSBKeymasterYou’ll get opinions from everybody else – we just do the facts – but since you’re asking, wanted to note we’re about to post the list of tree lots on the home page (and price check tomorrow – we didn’t get all the prices surveyed by closing time tonight) – these are all the West Seattle sites offering trees so far this year:
West Seattle Nursery (WSB sponsor; on California south of The Junction)
Holy Rosary (behind Admiral Safeway)
Tony’s (35th/Barton)
True Value in The Junction (44th/Edmunds)
Rite Aid, both locations (Westwood Village and California south of The Junction)
Home Depot (between Webster and Orchard just west of Delridge)
QFC (Westwood Village)
Those spots all sold trees last year too. This year there’s a new addition, “West Seattle Brothers,” on the south side of Alaska just south of Fauntleroy (between Howden-Kennedy and Bank of America).
I’ll have map links when I put these up on the home page later tonight.

WesCAddleMemberHoly Rosary in my opinion. A portion of the proceeds goes to local charities, and they have great trees, and great volunteers working the lot!

ZenguyParticipantIt is not West Seattle but Dunshee House has two lots, one on Capitol Hill and the other in the Rainer Valley. The proceeds go to a great cause and they have great volunteers…namely me.

JanSParticipantso, Zenguy…can we have the schedule when you’ll be there so we can come and give you a hard time?…errr…I mean visit and wish you good cheer…yeah, that’s it ;-)
November 30, 2008 at 9:16 am #648346
ZenguyParticipantYou can give me a hard time on Sunday the 7th and Saturday the 13th 12:00 to 4:00m on Capitol Hill. I will be the one trying to look butch in the plaid coat…lol

changingtimesMemberdid anyone buy there tree yet? what is the going price this year?
November 30, 2008 at 11:37 am #648348
WSBKeymasterThis will be our third year surveying WS tree prices and there is never a “going price.” Here’s what we wrote in 2006:

and in 2007:

flowerpetalMemberWe bought our tree yesterday from West Seattle Nursery. Its where we’ve gone every year for the last several years now. We paid $60 for ours; its about 8′ tall, well shaped and smells like Christmas!

JulieMemberIf you prefer your tree unsheared (sometimes called a “Charlie Brown” tree) I don’t know of a West Seattle lot. HR used to have them, but the last couple of years they’ve had few or none; we’ve had to leave West Seattle to find ours :(

flowerpetalMemberI still miss Chubby and Tubby trees. I thought I would need to go into therapy the first year I couldn’t get one of their trees.

herongrrrlParticipantNot WS and too late to buy from them this year, but for the past few years we’ve bought ours through the UW Forest Club. The forestry students grow the trees organically in the space beneath some big power lines that can’t be used for much of anything else. You pre-order the tree, then go to pick it up at the Center for Urban Horticulture (today was the pickup day, they were cut yesterday). $45 and you get your pick of 6-8 foot (or taller) organically grown noble firs that are lightly sheared but don’t look like they’ve been through a pencil sharpener, and proceeds benefit the student group.

WSMomParticipantThe past two years we’ve had good luck at West Seattle Nursery. Our trees have been fresh and last years tree didn’t die before Christmas! We just got our tree today and I was impressed with the many varieties to choose from, the quality of every tree on the lot, and the fairly low prices. I love our tree and with the $5.00 WSB coupon, we paid $45.00.

shihtzuParticipantA nursery on 99 and 175th still sells xmas trees under the Chubby and Tubby name!!
They’re the best, in my opinion.

bunnypugMemberI want a little tree. Like 3-4 feet. Does anyone know if any of the lots have a selection of smaller trees? I too miss Chubby & Tubby…

cruiserMemberBunny,
That’s not a tree it’s a plant:) I’m sure you’ll find a little stubby at holy rosary in safeway admiral.
Merry Christmas

mlfryeMemberthis is an old post, but couldn’t find a thread on the subject this year…
Just got a GREAT tree from the Holy Family lot. It was half the price of our tree last year (purchased from a nearby lot), looks great, smells great – just perfect!! $40 for a 7-ft noble fir!
December 14, 2009 at 5:40 am #648358
SemeleParticipantWe got our tree form Home Depot, 6ft Noble Fir for $30. They cut the ends, tie it and bag it and load into your vehicle if you need help. Tree was super fresh as well. Got it last weekend and house smells awesome!

WSBKeymasterWe published our annual West Seattle tree-price survey last Friday. Doesn’t substitute for your quality recommendations, but for anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s some extra info. Also noticed a new lot just as contributing reporter Mary Sheely set out to gather price data secret-shopper style – one on Delridge, south of Findlay. 8 WS sellers in all:
