What are good neighborhoods to take kids trick or treating in West Seattle?

normally I would say- ‘in your neighborhood’ but after last year, I want to hear the answer to this too. the Admiral area businesses are hosting trick or treating.

last year, I took my 5 year old in our neighborhood, and about 1 out of every 5 or 6 houses was participating. even some houses with Halloween decorations had all their lights off….this was at around 7pm. and in a neighborhood with no sidewalks, walking around in the dark for 45 minutes, trying to find a house to go to…yes, yes yes, I did have my headlamp, switched to ‘flashing’ light.. but

he had fun (which is what counts), got a little candy, but my Halloween spirit was a little crushed.

High Point was busy until pretty late last year. I finally turned off the lights at 8:30-9:00 because my guests were tired of pausing the movies… Doesn’t help with the whole scary effect. *ding-dong* pause it guys!! *groans*. In the past when I was too old to trick or treat (junior high according to my mom) and I handed out the candy she had me shut down at 8:00 but that’s because she got up for work at 4am and went to bed super early. I try to play it by ear, if there’s still pretty little kids showing up I keep at it, when it’s teenagers and adults (really??) I shut it down.

We have just recently bought a house near 34th/holly and are trying to figure out how much candy we should plan to have on hand! Any input?

I am in Arbor Heights and this is the last year my light will be on. It is 7:34, I have full size candy bars, Twinkies and Hostess Cupcakes. Only two families have come through and sadly one was on the other side of the street. Don’t know if they will be back this way or circle the block.

The business districts across America have successfully taken over Halloween. What a shame.

I too have only got 2 kids – both from next door. I thought we would get more too since our neighborhood had a map of those of us handing out candy. The Admiral area had a big trick or treating event so I bet a lot of families went up there. I grew up going out in my own neighborhood but times have changed and I bet more parents feel safer in numbers, whether it’s a business district or mall.

We live in FAuntlee Hills and have had 3 trick or treaters at 7:50pm. We went to friends house earlier in Belvidere and there were hundreds of people walking up and down the streets.

We got two in Highland Park–for the first time in 14 years of living here. Sad day. :(

We were out covering a few Halloween stops and as usual saw a LOT of trick or treaters in the general Admiral/south of Admiral area. Left a bowl of candy at our door in case someone came by – didn’t look like anyone did. But in our neighborhood, most of the front doors are set back from the street so it’s not an easy, obviously safe hop from house to house; on many of the Admiral streets, the homes are old Craftsman style with the front porch facing forward and more conducive to door-to-door visits … TR

Hmm, not sure where in Arbor Heights but California between 100th and 104th was a happening place with some terrific spooky front yards!

Genesee Hill was pretty busy! I think any neighborhood that is relatively flat with sidewalks probably is a good bet. There were a few groups that seemed like they drove in, parked and trick or treated here.

I love Trick or treating. I think it’s the best chance to be neighborly we get all year. Often it’s the only time I talk to some neighbors :)

I’m with you, Talaki34. I am also in Arbor Heights and I only got two knocks on my door last night, both were small groups of pre-teen girls. I was so looking forward to the little kids in their cute costumes…..sigh…..

South of Admiral on 45th looked like the old days last night. Lots of kids, haunted house on 45th and Stevens plus the Admiral trick or treat has brought back the trick or treaters.

I feel channel 13 did a great disservice to a friend. They asked if they could come and report from their home regarding Halloween. My friends home was very decorated and scary. They then reported about the feeling of safety this year trick or treating and the recent lewd conduct in our area using my friends photo and house in the interview. They made it look like there was a relationship between my friend and the lewd conduct.

Pattilea – your friend lives next door to my best friend! While out T-or-Ting we saw the news van and asked what’s up and were told they were doing a live broadcast at 10:pm – too late to do a public interest spot on all the cute kids & great home decorations.

When I walked by later they were finishing the story and I caught the tail end talking about the flasher. My brother was out walking with me and he asked how the flasher was connected to the house they filmed in front of (it’s NOT in any way) – I thought it was weird too.

Too bad they mis-used the house’s great decorations that way. Your friend always does Halloween up right and should get props for that, not be the back drop to some fear-mongering piece =-(
