dudeMemberwould like a recommendation for buying and installation of bamboo floors. Can anyone make a recommendation? Looking for flooring that can keep the air inside of our house healthy. Thanks

thansenMemberBamboo flooring is the best way to go, it’s durable, renewable, and lower cost.
There’s a great place on Tukwila:

ToddinWestwoodMemberWe did our house back in March. Solid, horizontal, about 5/8th of an inch thick, and we did glue down.
We purchased at Home Depot.

CarsonParticipantBamboo hardwoods in SODO, across from Costco is a great place to start. Keep in mind, they might not have the flooring you want, at a reasonable price but they do sell the trim pieces you will need, to pretty much match whatever bamboo you buy.
Keep in mind, its not as durable as claimed and most of the pre-finished is not all that eco friendly finish wise.

anonymeParticipantIf you’re concerned about healthy finishes as well as the environment, check out EcoHaus on 1st Avenue S. “Big Box” bamboo may not be sustainably harvested, and the finishes will probably be the standard toxic variety. Like Carson, I just recently heard from a neighbor that their bamboo floors are not as “hard” or as durable as advertised.
From a design standpoint, I think bamboo flooring is attractive in certain modern applications – not so much in older homes with traditional decor.

ToddinWestwoodMemberBUT, pre finished flooring means you dont have to have the smell and toxic finish being applied inside your house.
bamboo goes well with 50’s modern. :)

CarsonParticipantEco-haus sells a hard wax oil, its non toxic, doesn’t smell and stands up to a dog that won’t let anyone trim his nails.

hammerheadParticipantI have bamboo floors and many of the clients I clean for have them too. One of my clients has the darker color, gorgeous but does it scratch she has no kids as nor do we. Both of us are very disappointed in out decisions. My animals don’t come into the office. IF you have kids and/or animals and plan on putting this in the “main” area. I suggest you go to peoples house and see the wear and tear. We spent alot of money and not very happy with the end result on how it looks now.
It dents and scraps very easily on oak floors you and buff it out a bit. When the light his the bamboo floor everything shows.
The hard wax oil did not work for me.
My 2 cents

suzanneParticipantWe installed some bamboo a few years ago and were disappointed with how easily it got scratched and dented.
We recently learned of woven strand bamboo which is much harder and more resilient. We installed it in another area of the house and love it. It’s much more durable. It has a slightly different look than the horizontal or vertical bamboo, but I love it.

jMemberWe bought beautiful strand woven bamboo at iFloor in Tukwila (www.ifloor.com)for our entire house. Can’t help you out with installation because we did it ourselves with the assistance of our carpenter brother-in-law. iFloor may do installations, but they are great and they used strand woven bamboo in their showroom.
I can say that strand woven is very heavy. We chose a dark color that has the hand shaven look. It does scratch a bit, but most can be buffed out. We have a medium sized dog and her nails do not scratch it. Most scratches come from things like furniture. The floor that we chose can also be refinished, but we’d lose the hand shaven look.
