I am going to tackle the blackberry bushes this year. I have done some research online and I am just looking for further advice or tips on getting this job done. Thanks!

Prune ’em back and dig ’em out. It’s the only way to be sure.

i’m doing the cut and pull/dig-up-by-the-root method. it’s tedious. buy leather gloves. and a bunch of 32-gallon cans.

then, if the soil conditions are right, plant native wild strawberries. i’ve read that they compete with blackberries pretty well. or maybe douglas spirea or swamp rose.

this site has excellent information for native plants to replace the blackberries, with information about root systems, soil conditions, light conditions, etc. separated into tress/shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers. has links to pictures and tons more info at the UW horticulture website.

    good luck!

The prune and dig method does work, you must be persistent and the will come back until all the roots are gone. I have trimmed the long runners, painted the leaves with a blackberry killer and then dug them up once the stalks have died and that did a better job of keeping them from coming back.

i fonly planting a line of wild strawberries would keep the neighbors blackberries from encroaching on my soil :(
