WHALE ALERT: Resident orcas approaching again

12:48 PM: Thanks to Kersti Muul for updates on the Southern Resident Killer Whales that started the day in the South Sound and are finally close to our area – she says the orcas are northbound in Colvos Passage (west side of Vashon Island) and likely to emerge around 1 pm. So have your binoculars ready and let us know if you see them!

1:24 PM: Kersti says in a comment that the whales are now visible from west-facing West Seattle if you look toward north Vashon – but they could go out of view for a while if they stay west of Blake Island.

Visible from constellation now.Just north of the southworth ferry dock right of the towersIt’s a beautiful day and you can see lots of blows not sure if they’re going to go behind Blake or in front on our side

Northbound orcas just passing south end of Blake Island, on the east side. Visible from 6000 block of Beach Dr (with good optics).

Was that the reason for the helicopter? Maybe not, seemed to be more towards the bridge entrance though.Hovered from 1pm to 1:30pm (blue, white, and green helicopter- didn’t see any news logos)

It was the shared TV helicopter; we looked it up after getting one text. No emergencies in that area so obviously picking up B-roll for a story. I’m just guessing wildly that they’re doing something related to the Avalon/35th project (it’s the kind of thing that would lend itself to aerials) but I could be COMPLETELY wrong – having worked in TV for so long, I always enjoy guessing when it’s something non-obvious.

Kinda guessed something similar.. since the Mayor released the budget, maybe- video of road type projects ?

I considered that but seemed too far west for Highland Park.

Sorry, comment time is over.
