Mystery boom heard in eastern West Seattle

We’ve had several reports of a loud explosion-type sound around quarter till 5 – with people reporting it from Highland Park to Sunrise Heights – but so far, at least as far as we can tell from emergency dispatches, no cause has emerged, though some who heard it did call 911. We’ll keep monitoring.

Heard at 17th & Kenyon about 4:35AM. Woke my family up. Did you report this Doree?

  • Erech July 25, 2016 (8:06 am)

Yeah, it’s definitely near 29th and Mytrle, I heard it in the shower in the morning. Whoever has been just randomly setting them off at all times since even before the 4th. Supes obnox.

      +1 for Supes Obnox.

We had a few (likely) fireworks go off 2 nights ago, but not sure I heard this one, though something jolted me up around that time. We are in Sunrise Heights.

maybe the same person that’s been blowing up something a few times a night over in the north end of West Seattle all last week?

  • sam-c July 25, 2016 (8:35 am)

Weird- I missed this one and think I was sorta awake around then.  Heard fireworks around 4 am Sunday morning though. WTF is wrong with people?

Finally! Someone knows exactly where this is. Yes, Doree, did you report it? If it drives you crazy… report it! That’s the hard part about this stuff is identifying exactly where they’re coming from. The only way we can fight against this is if folks call repeatedly when they DO know where they’re coming from.

Yes, Doree —  tell SPD the address.  This is the second time in two nights we’ve called on this noice.  4:20 on Sunday and 4:34 this morning.  It’s scary!

  • Melissa July 25, 2016 (9:51 am)

I heard it on 13th and Elmgrove.  It woke me out of a deep sleep.

    • Highland Parker July 25, 2016 (6:06 pm)

Yes, I am on 14th, near Kenyon, and around 430 or so  this morning I was awakened by the bright flash and boom.  In past 2 or 3 months there have been other incidents of fireworks, gunfire, someone banging on houses or doors at odd hours of the night.

I wonder if we have one or more maladjusted perp(s) loose in our nabe.

I’ve heard the north Admiral bangs coming from either from the Fairmount Gully or the beach near there.  It helps if you call 911 immediately when you hear the sound and try to be specific about where you think it’s coming from.  It can be hard for the novice to tell the difference between loud fireworks and gun fire so it’s important to report these loud explosive sounds.

Yep, hear the late night/early morning booms every time from 24th and SW Cloverdale. My dog has not slept a night since the 4th as he’s so on edge from the fireworks randomly being let off. I have a vet appointment this afternoon to try to help him. Don’t understand the thoughtlessness of this type of behavior.

ALL FIREWORKS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL AT ALL TIMES.  I don’t understand why the King County Council cannot make this a law.

    • WSB July 25, 2016 (12:35 pm)

It is a law in Seattle. And in Burien. The unincorporated area between the two is the only place anywhere near here that they’re legal. That would change if the area is annexed, which could happen as soon as 2019 if there’s a vote in 2017 and IF it passes; given what it takes to ban them, even a ban initiated today likely would not take effect any sooner. But certainly those interested could contact the council/executive (local KC Councilmember, who also represents White Center, Vashon, etc.) is Joe McDermott – TR

I’m around 13th and Thistle and this one set off car alarms in our neighborhood. If it originated around 29th and Othello I think it would be much larger than an M-80.

  • K July 25, 2016 (8:01 pm)

Doree, please give his address to SPD!

Your neighbor has had his time to “blow his wad”.

Every time this guy sets off even one, my dog and others in  the area, not to mention those humans with PTSD are traumatized  yet again.

It’s not just a startled “oh my, what was that”?  It can set off siesures, or a heart attack. The guy is lucky a vet doesn’t jump out and pull a gun out.

It is not fair to anyone.

  • Melissa July 25, 2016 (9:28 pm)

One of my neighbors said he saw a flash of light on 14th and Kenyon.  Did anyone see a flash of light?

    • Highland Parker July 25, 2016 (9:40 pm)

Yes, l did see flash.  See my prior post.

      • Highland Parker July 26, 2016 (8:23 am)

Heard another boom Tuesday morning, 4:42, though not nearly as loud as Monday morning.

Someone is definitely on an early morning bad behavior schedule.

I was wondering if there was another one last night. It didn’t wake me up this time. I wonder what can be done about stopping this. And why are they doing it at roughly around the same time?

  • Hilari in HP July 26, 2016 (9:58 am)

I heard today’s, too.  The last three days have all been about 10 minutes apart.  Predicting one tomorrow morning at 4:53.

Sorry, comment time is over.
