Use the off-leash area at Westcrest Park? This is for you

If you use the off-leash area at Westcrest Park – West Seattle’s only official public off-leash area – can you spare a few minutes for a survey? It’s part of a project that’s just getting going with a $7,500 grant from King County Wastewater Treatment meant to help manage the off-leash area’s runoff problem, with water coming down the slope from the covered-reservoir area. A much-larger amount is being sought via grants, sponsorships, and private donations to pay for general improvements to the park, in partnership with Seattle Parks, King County, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Animal Shelter and COLA (Citizens for Off-Leash Areas). The survey is collecting opinions on what improvements you’d like to see at Westcrest. Answer ASAP; they’re planning to report results next month.

OK, so here’s ANOTHER chance for all you dog owner’s who want another off leash area to both step up take care of what you currently use as well as starting the process of advocating for another area.

You’re always vocal when folks get on your case about using Lincoln Park as an illegal off leash area, please do the right thing and arrange to do it right.

thanks for posting the survey. but it looks to be pretty specific to runoff issues and raingardens being installed in the dog park to catch the runoff problem and standing water issues.

It is easy and quick to answer the Q’s. Takes 2 minutes. No registration required.

And Lincoln Park Res, there is no such question about that on this survey. Perhaps you should bring that up with the “somebody’s”

Hi there, I’m one of the volunteers working on this project. To reply to ‘westseattledude’: the survey is specific to runoff, as this was the primary concern we’re addressing with the money we have raised so far. The survey is really helping shed light on the multiple issues that are important to the community, like lighting in the parking lot for example. ‘Lincoln Park Res’: Over 50% of respondents have offered to volunteer time to improve the park or make a donation to the park. Which is great news for Westcrest!

Thanks to all those volunteers at Westcrest. I saw the sign up a few days ago and really am impressed by the efforts. Good luck!

Thanks Makenna. I have no issue with Westcrest and am really happy that you’re seeing support in both effort and $.

I was taking the opportunity to ask that the many dog owners who have complained to me and others on this blog that Westcrest is inconvenient for them and they won’t use it no matter HOW nice it is. They simply can’t be bothered to make the trip. So they use Lincoln Park illegally and are usually quite aggressive about it when it gets mentioned – even by other pet owners.

The point being, these people have yet another opportunity to discuss how to create an additional OLA. All it takes is for them to do the right thing.

So, has anyone asked about how to follow up with COLA on a new OLA?

Lincoln Park Res: I’m also a dog owner, and Lincoln Park user, and I’m also very upset when I see other dog owners irresponsibly using the park as an off-leash area. Just so you know, there are a lot of us out there who agree with you and would like to see this usage curtailed.

Sorry, comment time is over.
