High-school soccer, report #1: West Seattle HS to the playoffs

Tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm at Bishop Blanchet, it’s the first playoff game for West Seattle High School‘s boys-varsity soccer team in years, according to a proud parent who sent us the update (along with other reports during the season): “It has been a hard up-and-down season for the Wildcats,” reports our correspondent, “but with great coaches and faith, in the end they pulled it off and made it to the playoffs.” Season highlights include the team’s youth – 7 freshmen on the varsity squad, five of them starters including their goalie; their first victory over crosstown rivals Chief Sealth International High School in years; “Alizar Gilay leading the team with 6 goals …” Even the defense scored goals – our correspondent mentions Cole Nofsinger and Brian McMonigle, and, we’re told, “to top it off, goalie Akili Kasim scored the winning goal last week – an 80-yard goal.” (The photo above shows teammates congratulating him.)

WSHS has a great future with both their girl’s and boy’s soccer teams. Very good players, and most of the starters on both teams are freshmen and sophomores, with a few juniors. That bodes well for the next few years at least.

My oldest son played for WSHS and made the playoffs back in 2009, so it hasn’t quite been 13 years.

Glad somebody got this moment on photo. I was walking my dog and was able to catch this game. I have no relationship to either team. But the way West Seattle Players handled themselves during the foal play of the other team or how 2 players went to hit the goalie and he just moved back with look like your not throwing me off my game. Had much to say about them, very sad to see the referee had no control of the away team.
West Seattle Parents are very lively to be around, hopefully next year I will get to a few more games. You should be proud of all the players.

Great Goal Young Man ” 80 Yards ” I spoke about that goal for a week to people. I played college ball and have never seen anything that amazing.
