The WSBeat: Destructive departure; post-bar brawl

By Megan Sheppard

From reports on cases handled recently by Southwest Precinct officers:

*Around 3 pm Monday, a rude patron kept bothering other customers at a Junction bar and was asked to leave. He declined, threw a glass, and then launched a chair through a $2,000 flat-screen TV. He was taken to the ground, held for officers and was later booked into King County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault.

The files were a little threadbare (up until the past few days, too late for this roundup), so just three more summaries are ahead:

*After leaving a North Admiral bar Friday afternoon of last week, a man received severe facial fractures from a stranger who attacked him. Apparently not wanting to be left out of the mayhem, bystanders hanging out in front of another bar jumped into the fray. The victim requires surgery. The suspects remain at large.

*Just before midnight on Sunday, an intoxicated 37-year-old Beach Drive resident was hanging out at Alki, causing a disturbance in a bar and arguing with his girlfriend. After leaving, he started revving his motorcycle engine in the street, so loudly that a 74-year-old man came out of his home and asked him to quit making so much noise, as people were trying to sleep. The suspect cursed the older man, then lunged and knocked him to the ground. Officers had to support the shaken victim, who was examined by medics. The suspect denied hitting anyone and was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.

*Last Sunday around 5 p.m., after an officer made an announcement on a public-address system, a child lost at Alki was reunited with her mother. The mom admitted that she had a record with Child Protective Services and that children had been removed from her home in the past. Officers returned the child to her, but explained that because of her extensive history, a report of the incident would be forwarded to CPS.

    WSB:

What “Junction Bar” on Monday? What North Admiral” Bar on Friday?

    Thanks!

We do not routinely identify establishments or addresses in these roundups, only in major incidents – TR

I wouldn’t identify the establishment either, especially when it could be a sponsor of WSB! Interesting policy. Suppose someone getting beat down by multiple perps, in broad daylight no less, is relatively ‘minor.’

Actually, John, we have no bar sponsors, except for Feedback Lounge, which is neither in the Junction nor in Admiral. I myself do not know the establishments’ names; this is how Megan writes her column, from reports she reviews at the precinct, always has, without names or addresses, and by major, I mean incidents big enough that they would have come to our attention as they happened, which none of these did. – TR

Yeah, I would like to know which bars these thugs are hanging out at.

Like the details say here…I know exactly to the bone what happened and were it happened. People have no class nowdays. The new influx of people moving here are making it worse. It isn’t how it used to be were everyone knew everybody in West Seattle at one time and was a happy hardcore crowd. The actual story is a guy wanted to buy a couple of girls around and they declined. He threw a glass at and missed the owner behind the bar, picked up chairs and started tossing them around and flung something at the TV screen hanging over the bar and cracked it. I’ve known the owners for quite some time. Normally in this establishment, this crap doesn’t happen.

The admiral incident actually occurred in the sidewalk/street near bars, so it doesn’t really matter which bar they came from. My friend is now recovering from surgery, and the suspects have still not been identified. And it was actually around midnight, not afternoon time.

What’s the cutoff for West Seattle newbies, Jiggers?
I’ve only lived here for about ten years. Long before that, I was raised in, brace yourself, Bellevue. Worst of all, I was born in California, and not even Northern Ca. In fact, and I’m certain you’ll find this completely unsurprising, I was born in L.A.
Holy crap Jiggers, do you just constantly suck on lemons?

wow drunk people behaving badly…what is this world coming to? would be interesting to find out how many violent crimes on average are committed by people whom are intoxicated on booze as opposed to marijuana…just sayin

What has happened to the News? Policemen try to stop gang violence and use a “bad” word and they are identified and disciplined but a West Seattle bar is torn to shreds by a drunken maniac and we cannot learn the name of that Bar? Why? A huge fight happens at our hallowed SouthWest Community Center during a basketball game, people have guns and knives, and we cannot be told who these people are? I think the News Media ought to tell it like it is. It is too easy to come to West Seattle and do crimes, burgles, assaults etc. and their neighbors never even know who they are. In a smaller town, if you beat people up and stole from your neighbors, you would need to leave but in Seattle they stay and stay and stay.

I agree with Jiggers. What happened to the home town, close knit community of West Seattle? I’ve lived here my whole life, and it just keeps getting worse and worse.

  • June August 29, 2011 (7:44 am)

And shame on the drunk who pushed down a sweet old man!

  • Aman August 29, 2011 (7:59 am)

Isn’t transparency in news reporting generally a good thing? Is there a WSB “reporting protocol? Or, does each contributing editor follow their own style-intuition?

Seems to me that the “Who, What, Where, When, Why and How” questions of reporting are sound guidelines to follow. Especially a crime story taking place at venues visited by the general public.

By NOT identifying the name of the “Juncrion Bar” or the “North Admiral Bar” you call in question ALL drinking/dining establishments located in these neighborhoods. Is that REALLY what you want to convey?

    I don’t think so.
    Thanks!

I’ll say it..it was at the Rocksport. They have nothing to hide. It won’t ruin their reputation either. It’s not the first time an incident like this has happened, nor it will be the last time in the Junction. You have your general drunk idiots who can’t handle themselves after a certain point. That’s what the cops are there for, and I encourage the police to walk through the bars more during prime time like they used to do.

I suggest you folks learn to handle your liquor consumption alot better and on another note to you boozed up smokers QUIT THROWING YOUR CIGARET BUTTS INTO THE GUTTER WHICH EVENTUALLY LAND INTO OUR WATERSHED THATS MEANS YOU TOO LA CALIFORNIA!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
