Looking back at West Seattle’s 2010, #1: Christopher’s photos

Over the course of today/tonight, we’re looking back at West Seattle’s 2010 in a few ways. Here’s the first. Christopher Boffoli photographed dozens of notable stories for WSB again this year; he went through his archives via Flickr and created this montage of memorable scenes. It’s not in order of importance – you’ll see a number of breaking-news scenes since Christopher is often first to arrive, but also wildlife, parade participants, sights at sea and in the sky … a great visual retrospective. Just click the “play” button and the images will automatically advance as you watch. Coming up later, our “top stories of the year” list, as well as year-end thanks. (But we’ll be here as usual covering today’s news all day, too!)

We are incredibly fortunate to have Christopher working for our little burg. However, I’m now terrified of getting into my car…

You could call that photo montage “slow down west seattle”!

Great photos, great job Christopher. What was happening in the pics of what appears to be a collapsed roadway?

  • Leroniusmonkfish December 31, 2010 (11:36 am)

Lots of car crashes…whatever happened to the U-Boat commander who launched his 911 off Alki? That was classic.

We tried to follow that one up. Traffic incidents are almost impossible to trace unless somebody died … the main investigator couldn’t find anything in his records. That one was in 2009!

More cops and robbers! I’d like to see more accidents too! I wasn’t aware we lived in such a war zone. Apparently, I need to pay more attention. Should I consider moving to a safer hood?

How about a second retrospective with only positive images, eh?

Beautiful photographs of our community at its best, and a timely, graphic, reminder to drive safely today and every day. A happy, healthy New Year to all!

barbjo: Those images were from the Seattle Fire Department structural collapse rescue training last March at the Joint Training Facility on Meyers Way South. It is a full scale simulator where every firefighter in Seattle received training on how to locate and extract victims of a major structural collapse.

WSB coverage, including a video package of the training, can be found here:

The opening image in the montage prompts me to ask…. what time is the polar bear plunge tomorrow?!

  • Babs December 31, 2010 (2:01 pm)

What is the story of the police with the white dog? Was it running in traffic? Loved it, tender.

    • WSB December 31, 2010 (2:05 pm)

Babs, I believe that was the dog rescued from the car crash in the preceding photo. The dog was in the car and officers hung onto it till they could get it safely home.
      .
Moxi – I ran a reminder on that just a couple stories ago; 10 am, across from Duke’s.

2009 for the U-Boat Commander! Damn how time flies. Happy New Year WSB!!! Even living in AZ now for the past year+ I still check this site out daily.

Happy New Year to you too! We have more than a few WS ex-pats, it seems – a lady who’s now in TX noted seeing the local TV station pick up the “poisoned trees?” story from the “news from other stations around the country” feed and commented about that either here or on FB. Small world.

  • miws December 31, 2010 (10:58 pm)

I believe it was the poisoned tree story, that the P-I reported on the other day, that they credited WSB in the article Headline, rather than just in the body of the story.

    .

I think it probably has to do with the writing style for particular that P-I Feature, (don’t remember if it was 911 Blog, or Strange Bedfellows), but, it was still cool to see WSB acknowledged in the Headline!
