Admiral Way crash updates: Bicyclist’s condition; police’s request

(WSB photo, taken after rescuers had raised the car and extricated the bicyclist)
Two updates in the aftermath of this morning’s Admiral Way/SW Manning/30th SW (map) collision between a car and a bicyclist who had to be rescued from beneath it: First, Laura, identifying herself as the bicycle rider’s wife, says in comments on the original WSB story that her husband is in ICU awaiting surgery; read her full comment here. Second, Seattle Police investigators asked us to publish this call for any witness(es) to come forward:

(This is) a request from the Seattle Police Department, for anyone that witnessed the collision event between the SUV & Bicyclist on SW Admiral Way & SW Manning St., to contact Detective Tim Wear at (206) 684-8935. Would like to hear from anyone that witnessed the collision event. Thank you.

If you missed our earlier coverage – the car’s driver was not hurt; Admiral Way reopened just before 1 pm, almost 4 1/2 hours after this morning’s collision. ADDED 9:04 PM: And from the comment section following our original report – a commenter who says she is the driver’s wife, explaining that their whole family bicycles too. Read her full comment here.

That is an inappropriate comment. In the case of someone who has been seriously injured and has a family and children, you should keep your insensitive comment to yourself.

David…this is not the time and place for such comments. He did have as much right as you or me according to the laws…and we should just be thankful that no one lost their life. Save the blame for another time and place, please. Thank-you.

I have deleted the comment to which others refer. Sorry it went through in the first place.

I am glad I did not read the comment by David. I know Doug and he is a VERY experienced rider. He has done that route for many years. He deserves nothing but respect and good wishes from EVERYONE.

Glad to see that the rider is doing as well as can be expected considering the nightmare quality of this situation.

Also, great job WSB, really on this from minute one. Great resource for us all here in WS!

    Thanks

I know Doug as a friend and co-worker, and I know him to be a very responsible and careful recumbent biker. Best wishes to him and his family.

It sounds like he is going to make a strong recovery, but long nonetheless, is there anything we as a community can do to lessen the burden on the family? Even something small like grocery shopping or carpool for the kids?

  • alki_resident May 21, 2010 (3:26 pm)

Best wishes to Doug, his Wife, and his Family. We wish you a speedy recovery, and are sending positive thoughts your way.

  • Hello! May 21, 2010 (6:49 pm)

If everyone knows the people in question, why not just mail them a card, call them, etc . . . Can they just have their privacy? Would the parties involved not reach out to WSB if they wanted community support? Speedy recoveries to all involved!

I know Doug from LOOONG ago when he was tuning/rebuilding pianos. We technicians here in Olympia wish Doug and the family the best. As a side note, I’m very impressed with WSB and the surrounding community. What love, support, and concern for both parties involved. Makes me want to move to West Seattle! Now that’s a ‘community’.

Sorry, comment time is over.
