West Seattle Whale Watch: Humpback sighting

ORIGINAL 4:02 PM REPORT: Just got a call from Jeff Hogan, who usually gives us the heads-up about orca sightings: A humpback whale has been spotted in the past hour near the Fauntleroy ferry dock, breaching and spy-hopping. (Reportedly headed northbound from there.)

6:14 PM UPDATE: Adding two photos from a nearby resident – above, you see part of the whale; below, the splash after a breach (the resident said she saw TWO of those!):

I love humpback whales – have never seen one in Seattle but certainly a lot off Maui!

What’s the latest? Still heading north from Lincoln Park area?

I saw him breach about a mile south of the Fauntleroy ferry dock! It was a few minutes earlier than the sighting posted. It looked to me like there were two of them heading north.

Did anyone else see the whale(s)? I looked but am sad to have missed out.

While kayaking off West Point on Saturday May 9 a whale surfaced 50 yards from me. I was just inside the buoy and the whale was just outside. An Argosy Tours boat was watching it from about 150- 200 yeards away. It continued north for about 5 minutes after I spotted it and then sounded. Argosy says that it was a Minke, however, it prominantly displayed it’s tail when it dove. It did have a dorsal fin so it wasn’t a Grey. I suspect it was one of these animals that was spotted at Fauntleroy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
