Alert for iPhone/iPod Touch users: New WSB viewing option

By request, we’re trying out an iPhone version of WSB that should enable you to skim the site faster. So, if you have an iPhone (or iPod Touch) that version will load as the default, but you can switch to “normal” view with a link at the bottom – to go back to the “iPhone version,” you will again see a link at the bottom of the “regular” page. Let us know what you think!

I just tried it out and love it!

It makes it much. much easier to read WSB on the iPhone and looks quite sleek on top of that. I like to the comment indicator, but it would be even better if it would indicate the number of new comments available since the last time I read an entry.

    Thanks for setting this up!

very nice, indeed one suggestion – perhaps putting in the ability to remember info for commenting (if possible). thanks for doing this.

scratch that, reverse it. that seems to be working. it’s too early for me.

  • d February 16, 2009 (6:24 am)

Just gave it a go. That is so sweet!

The only thing I’m not figuring out is where the Forum tab went to? On the Menu page, I see all of the tabs except for that and WS 101?

    Really nice – thanks WSB!

Looks great. Nice job. I think I prefer the look of the iphone blog… Maybe it’s time to freshen up the look of the web version?

Keep up the great work WSB.

  • cjboffoli February 16, 2009 (9:43 am)

Brilliant! I can’t find any other news source in Seattle that has taken the time to do this for their readers. Nice to see the WSB at the leading edge of things, as ever.

Any chance you could provide the direct-url to the iphone version so that I could bookmark/test it for Windows Mobile? A small-screen version would certainly be nice… and there’s other devices than the iPhone…

  • cjboffoli February 16, 2009 (10:17 am)

StephenHJ: As I understand it, there is no separate URL for the iPhone version of the site. It is just a bit of code built in to the site that detects when readers are accessing the site with an iPhone and serves out a simplified, specially rendered, version of the site that is designed to accommodate the dimensions of the iPhone (and iPod Touch) display.

The iPhone page looks great, and the comment icon is nice. If you read more widely than the WSB, you might want to look into one of the RSS readers that are available for the iPhone, as they will work for most news sites, and are automatically formatting the content for the iPhone. I just use Google’s reader and it formats nicely for the iPhone (and supports more phones…)

d – The forums unfortunately run on a separate program and they don’t integrate into this, at this point. I should have mentioned that. So you’ll have to go back out to the “regular” version to check them.
chris – Re: freshening the web version, it has long been in the works and won’t be too much longer now, but it’s a bigger project than offering an alternate look for iPhone, unfortunately, given how big our databases have become … and what we need to make sure the new look does. Your patience is appreciated! – TR

I need an iphone like I need a dose of a trepanation.

  • Lou February 16, 2009 (11:10 am)

  • Keith February 16, 2009 (11:23 am)

Looks and works great– nice one!

  • Kirida February 16, 2009 (1:20 pm)

Great job, wsb! It looks great! Do your stats show how many visitors are on an iPhone?

  • ambc February 16, 2009 (2:46 pm)

    This is great…thanks!

  • jno February 16, 2009 (3:03 pm)

Excellent!! My only minor nit-pick is that the ShareThis dialog opens down and to the right such that an awkward scroll is required to view it. Not the end of the world, and otherwise an optimal iPhone viewing experience. Thanks!

  • Guitarboy53 February 16, 2009 (4:55 pm)

Love the site from my new iPhone!!! Great work:)

  • manoli February 16, 2009 (6:28 pm)

Love the new format. As everybody says, it loads faster, very easy to navigate and same look and feel as other iPhone applications. Thanks for taking the time and effort to implement this!

  • RS February 16, 2009 (6:57 pm)

    Nicely done!

  • Cheryl February 17, 2009 (10:09 pm)

Thanks WSB for provding iPhone users with an easier interface to read your latest/greatest posts … It’s a great blog feature for folks like me who accsss & read almost all of my on-line content from my mobile.

Note to all the comments asking for improvements, changes, MS mobile access, the iPhone “viewer” is an auto-formatting iPhone widget feature on Word Press blogs. If you want changes, direct your concerns to the program coding wonks at Word Press.

Well, actually, there’s not much “at WordPress.” WP is open source and so literally thousands of developers around the world — most without making a cent off it (unless people donate) — are making new features to offer to users (known as “plugins” because in most cases you can implement them fairly easily). This was one of them; there were a couple of options for iPhone optimization, I took a quick look and decided to try this one. We are not developers, though, so modifications require expert help and $$$$$ (which we spent recently to tweak some things in the forum, for example). Keep the requests coming, though, we’re always looking for ways to make this work better for you … TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
