Zippy’s Giant Burgers’ new location won’t open today after all

Today was tentatively scheduled to be the grand reopening of Zippy’s Giant Burgers in its new White Center location – but burger fans are going to have to wait another week or so. We checked with Zippy’s proprietor Blaine Cook after noticing early this morning that the countdown clock atop the Zippy’s website had changed from counting the seconds till April 25th (it’s now counting to May 1st). He explains, “The permit required for us to replace the fire suppression system has not gone through. Our current best case is a week. Might be a week and a half.” Zippy’s closed its original Highland Park location nine days ago for the move, which was made necessary by the fact their ex-landlord lost the building to foreclosure last fall (which also led to the ex-landlord’s own business, SeaMart, closing, as well as the third business on the site, JoJo’s Espresso). The new location is at 9614 14th SW in White Center, with more room and parking. (April 12th photo by Deanie Schwarz for WSB/White Center Now)

Bummer. I was looking forward to checking out the new digs today. Well, we’ll wait. :-)

Waiting only increases the longing. The first bite (again) will be even better, methinks. :)

It is funny that the permit would take so long. With construction so slow you would think that they would have the time to spend a hour and look at the plans see that its ok and give you your permit. The one thing about the king co. building dept. they never seem to care that someones way to make a living is on the line. I hope they don’t make you into a circus animal and keep making you jump through costly hoops. Looking forward to your GREAT BURGERS!!!!!!!!!!

The banks are so strange. Instead of the foreclosure action resulting in some rental income from JoJo’s and Zippy’s, the lender prefers an empty building with no income.

@foyboy The number of inspectors and people handling permits for the city/county is down from several hundred people a few yrs ago, to less than a handfull today. That’s why building permits are taking FOREVER these days. You can thank budget cutbacks and layoffs.
    .
I hope for Zippy’s sake they can get up and running as soon as possible, every day that store isn’t serving burgers, is a day they’re paying rent w/o an income.
    .
    Can’t wait til they open!

wish we could do something to facilitate the permit…

  • rahelc April 26, 2011 (7:58 am)

Of course the groupons will still be honored. Having the extra un-hurried time to get the joint all ship shape is almost a blessing in disguise for us. Please be patient and bare with us.

The one time I attemped to go I missed it as they were just closing. I am happy to see that they will be moving even closer. I was a longtime WS junction person but when I bought I couldn’t afford staying right there. I finally wound up in Shorewood, inbetween WC and Arbor Heights. I have been through White Center numerous times and am so happy to see how it is changing and getting built-up. The people who think it is unsafe and un-cool because it is not WS-proper or on Cali. Ave, should just stay home then! I hope even more wonderful things happen in WC! I am ready and even checked out the menu!

Sorry, comment time is over.
