engi89MemberGreetings West Seattleite’s,
I moved here recently and am looking to get involved with some community outreach projects. I am very busy during the week but am wondering if there is any sort of community meal I can help with or a weekend project. I am just looking for ideas for a laid back opportunity that will allow me to drop in but also form relationships with people in the community. I look forward to suggestions.
Thank you!

WSBKeymasterPreceding any answers that will come in here … There are LOTS of such opportunities and we usually publish them on the home page or in the calendar. When on the home page, https://westseattleblog.com/category/how-to-help
is the category.
Re: community meals, not so much. But both local food banks would LOVE help – http://www.westseattlefoodbank.org and http://www.whitecenterfoodbank.org (which serves part of West Seattle as well as White Center) …
there’s a start.
welcome to West Seattle!

JanSParticipantI realize this isn’t West Seattle, but it’s for a really great cause: From St. Cloud’s restaurant in Madrona: http://www.stclouds.com/ :
We invite you to join us for our Monthly Homeless Cooking this Wednesday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a morning of spirited cooking and good fellowship, as we put together fresh ingredients to prepare a tasty meal that provides an hour of dignity and good food to those who enjoy too little of both in their lives. All are welcome, whether you are a professional chef or a well-intended stirrer and chopper! Everyone contributes to our success on this day.
This month’s proteins include another huge donation from our friends at Ocean Beauty, facilitated by our friend Therese Heacock: 50# of wild salmon and 30# of tilapia. We are adding to it over 100# of chicken thighs for some bbq. As always, bring whatever inspires you other than protein and we’ll put it to great use.
If you can’t join us but would like to participate, we welcome food donations and/or monetary donations (more info below). We are feeding nearly 500 people at 8 shelters, which takes more than just good intentions! We are grateful for the contributions of Madrona restaurants The Hi Spot and Naam, as well as the sponsorship and support of the Neighborhood Cooking Foundation to help us in this monthly endeavor.
We also invite you to join us Monday night (tonight!), June 17, for Meatloaf With a Cause – our monthly celebration of our homeless cooking where John cooks up a wonderfully homey and delicious meatloaf dinner that’s served at St. Clouds as our dinner special on the Monday night preceding homeless cooking. John was gifted the recipe by friend-of-St. Clouds and writer-extraordinaire Stewart Stern (Rebel Without a Cause, Sybil).
Making Donations
Food Donations – drop off/bring with you fresh ingredients, staples, or flavor bursts to St. Clouds either the day before or the morning of the cooking. No protein please, we take care of providing that.
Monetary Donations – make a tax-deductible donation to help cover the cost of the protein we provide and the utilities/packaging that go into creating the meal at St. Clouds. Write checks to Neighborhood Cooking Foundation and drop off or mail to St. Clouds.
Who We Feed – nearly 500 people in all!
*Tent City 3 – a roving site for 100 homeless persons in the Seattle area
*First Church – 70 men who spend the night in a Belltown shelter, open every night of the year. Hosted by the Compass Center.
*YWCA Opportunity Place (formerly Angelines) – a drop in center for 150 women everyday in the Belltown neighborhood.
*YWCA Women and Childrens Shelter – a secure, confidential refuge for homeless women and their children in downtown Seattle.
*Jubilee Women’s Center – housing, along with job training and counseling to assist women in transitioning from homelessness to home-ness, on Capital Hill.
*PSKS-Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets- a youth and young adult drop-in center for the homeless on Capital Hill
Cherry Street YWCA Transitional Housing – 30 adults and families transitioning from homelessness to homes.
Julia’s Place – in Madrona’s Grace Presbyterian Church – 8 families (moms, dads, kids) who stay in our nearby church.

engi89MemberThank you for the tips! Jan S, unfortunately I work Mondays and Thursdays until seven and Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays until 4. Is there ever any opportunities on Wednesday or Tuesday evenings or weekends. I have experience cooking and would love to serve the community in this way, my time is unfortunately limited but I really would love to help!
