ghar72ParticipantIf you went through the open enrollment process, school assignments have been posted. I couldn’t find this via the SPS site, but a friend of a friend gave it to me. You just need your child’s ID number and DOB to check.
Better luck to you all than us…we’re waitlisted #18 at STEM. Boo.

WSBKeymasterThanks for sharing that. I haven’t seen it elsewhere. Hope it really does work – according to a thread on the best site for Seattle Public Schools info, official and unofficial, http://saveseattleschools.blogspot.com , the info isn’t supposed to be available till Monday morning. While I tried verifying by using our SPS student’s info, he is not changing schools for next year so the fact his assignment is in there (which we got by letter long ago) doesn’t necessarily mean everything’s there – if anyone finds it inaccessible or otherwise dubious, please advise, because I’m going to mention this on the main page. – TR

ghar72ParticipantHi TR, I know of four other families who have tried the site. Three are waitlisted and one got in to their #1 school. Like I said, link came from a friend of a friend, so I can’t ask them how they came to find it. I was hoping the results for us weren’t accurate, but when the one family got in to their #1 choice it kind of dashed that idea.

MercyMoiParticipantHey ghar72, are you trying to get into K at STEM next year or a higher grade? Applying for 1st grade could be hard because we have a large K population now with probably few spots opening up next year. The higher grades will probably have more openings. If you’re trying to get into K, I really don’t know what to say because the district hasn’t been transparent about how many K classes they’re creating. Last summer there were a bunch of people waitlisted for K and they created a K-1 split to accommodate them – it took them a long time to come to that decision though. I don’t want to give you false hopes at all, I don’t know what the district is planning for our school (which is a whole ‘nuther frustration), I’m just saying that things may not be as they seem.

ghar72ParticipantWe’re trying for K. I’d thought there would be three K’s, but had no confirmation for that. I’ve heard numbers over 30 on the waitlist for K for STEM. Not much to do til after Spring Break. I’m assuming no one will be at district offices next week to talk with. I haven’t given up hope yet, but #18 does not feel promising. Thanks for comments, MercyMoi.

cs in hpParticipantMercyMoi- is there anything we can do to help in the decision to open a 4th Kindergarten at STEM? we’re right behind ghar72 in the wait list…. HELP!!!

BonnieParticipantDon’t lose hope! A lot of things can happen between now and September. People move, people change their minds, classes may be added. A lot happens in the next 5 months. Good luck!

lizzertateMemberHow did you get your student ID #? I’m registering mine for Kindergarten also, and was also trying to get her into stem, but I don’t know her ID# to check. Should I call?
April 15, 2013 at 3:46 pm #788181
BonnieParticipantI think the offices are closed. I don’t remember how I got the student ID# years ago. You should get something in the mail in a few days and it will have the ID number on it.
April 15, 2013 at 4:24 pm #788182
ghar72ParticipantWhen we registered for K, SPS sent us a letter with our son’s assigned school (aka neighborhood school). His ID number was on that letter. It isn’t on the open enrollment form I filled out, FYI.

pagefiveParticipantThanks for sharing the link, ghar72. It worked for us. Our twins are waitlisted for 1st grade at STEM. We were told during the tour that they anticipated 10-11 openings in 1st grade, but I’m not sure if that ended up being the case. I’m anxious but also hopeful that some spots will open up in the next 5 months.
April 15, 2013 at 5:07 pm #788184
skeeterParticipantDoes SPS provide student transportation only if the student attends the neighborhood (assigned) school? Or will SPS provide transportation to any SPS school the child attends? Thanks.

OliverMemberHello!
If you are on the K-5 STEM waitlist, please contact Seattle School Board Members, including Marty McClaren, the West Seattle area director, enrollment (Tracy Libros), Superintendent Banda, and attend district meetings to advocate for growing this already successful option school for more equitable opportunity and permament placement at Fairmount Park. So far, they are not allowing us to add classes, though we have the space and there would be space if we are placed at Fairmount Park.
New and waitlisted families are welcome at two upcoming events: Tuesday, April 23rd, at 7:00, staff and parents will present our long term strategic plan. Sunday, April 28th liquid ice cream social (stem style) at 3 (? don’t quote me on the time. http://www.k5stempta.org
We welcome your involvement now!
SPS currently provides transporation to K-5 STEM as long as you are in West Seattle. All bets are always off in future years.
Heidi – K-5 STEM Co. PTA President (You may also email me and my co-pres at president@k5stempta.org if you have questions. But, no we don’t have any secrets to increasing odds of getting in, except for adding another class)

OliverMemberPS – we may be slow to respond from the pta email address since it is Spring Break and many of us are out of town.

ghar72ParticipantHi Heidi,
Thanks for the info. What did you mean by “So far they are not allowing us to add any classes”? Do you mean beyond a certain number at each grade level? Do you know how many K classes they’ve filled for 2013? I’d assumed there would be three, since that’s how many there are this year, but of course one can never assume, especially with SPS. I know it’s early in the game to be asking, but thought I’d try, seeing as how I can’t chat with anyone at enrollment until next week! Thanks for any insight.

OliverMemberI’ve only seen the waitlist numbers, but I don’t belive they are accurate. I’m confirming the facts before I spout off on that, though. They have probably filled three K classes, but we could have another k-1 split or add a 4th. Plenty of space at Boren.
April 16, 2013 at 4:03 am #788189
ghar72ParticipantThanks, Heidi. Appreciate your commenting!
April 16, 2013 at 5:12 am #788190
beefParticipantcurrent wait list numbers? i thought i heard of people in the 30s for K @ Stem. This would seem to indicate otherwise. We are #4 at the moment.
April 16, 2013 at 5:51 pm #788191
westseajadeMemberCurrently there are 3 1/2 K classes at STEM (3 Ks and a K/1 split.) I don’t know if they are continuing the K/1 split in the fall; I don’t think they have announced what the class configurations will be. My child is currently at STEM, but is on the waiting list for Pathfinder, which also has a long waiting list, unfortunately.
April 16, 2013 at 7:03 pm #788192
addParticipantAlso, just because there is space at a facility for another class (and plenty of people wanting to fill it), doesn’t mean there is budget for another teacher.
