Hey, I’ve always assumed we were seeing Anna’s hummingbirds around here but could they be Rufous? I saw a sign that said they are prevalent in this area. Now I’m all confused!

Anna’s are here all year round, but I’m pretty sure the rufous is only a seasonal visitor still. Anna’s are green, rufous are a rusty reddish color (hence the name), so they are pretty easy to tell apart. The best time to spot them here is in the earlier spring, when the salmonberry and red-flowering currant bloom. I haven’t seen many rufous around in the past several years…but maybe that’s just because I have some really aggressive Anna’s who keep a close guard on “their” salmonberry and currant bushes in my yard? :)

herongrrrl is correct on the two being easy to tell apart (but it does help to have them side by side). I believe Rufous are a bit smaller too. I also only have Anna’s at my feeder but see Rufous quite a bit when I visit my folks on Lopez Island. The two varieties share the feeder there.
