Anyone have a rec for sanding and refinishing hardwood floors? Much appreciated!

Not sure if you’re asking for tips on doing it yourself, or wanting names of contractors, but…

I’m a 63 year old woman and I did mine myself. They’re gorgeous! I highly recommend Osmo Polyx-oil for finishing floors. It’s a non-toxic, repairable (unlike polyurethane) finish available from Green Depot. The sander was rented from Home Depot. The newer ones with large discs work better – and with less damage – than the old drum sanders.

anonyme – hope you don’t mind me picking your brain….I’ve been hesitant to refinish my floors..did you sand just a thin top layer & then Osmo Polyx-oil 1 coat….and that was it? Or is it more complicated? I’m a 61 year old woman and would love to do this successfully:)

Yes! I would love to hear more about this, and a non-toxic item would be great for homes with pets..Do tell :)

It really isn’t very complicated, it just takes some elbow grease. My floors were in VERY rough shape – old fir that had been under linoleum or carpet for decades. It looked like a barn floor. So I had to start with 40 grit and work up to 120 to get a smooth surface, which is probably way more work than you will need to do.

If your floor is in better shape than mine was, you could probably just go straight to the 120 grit to get the old stain/polyurethane off. That shouldn’t be too difficult at all. I applied the Osmo on my hands and knees using soft rags, but you can use a mop-style applicator as well. Green Depot sells all the supplies needed.

I’m not saying this is an easy job – it’s tedious, the sander is heavy, and it is a bit time consuming. But it can be done by anyone in reasonable physical condition who has a DIY attitude.

Below are a couple of links that I hope are helpful. The first is a link to the product on Green Depot’s website (the physical store is located in SODO). The second is a link to the OSMO headquarters, which is also located here in Seattle. A couple of months ago I contacted them by email with a cleaning/waxing question and the customer service response was impressively prompt and thorough. They can answer any questions you have. Good luck!
