I’ve been letting my hair go uncolored since June. Kind of like the gray. Unfortunately that leaves the other 7/8 of my longish hair its old, dyed, stripy color. Any ideas to get it all gray? Recommendations?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately you can’t color it grey. Well you could but it won’t look like your natural grey. Once your hair is colored, its colored. No way to take the artifcial color out and be left with your natural color This is a tough problem that many deal with. My best advice is to cut it. Most people don’t like that option but really it’s the only way. Other options could ease your transition. You could lighten the rest of you hair to a blond ish color so that it is closer to the grey, or you could use a semi permanent on the roots to blend the grey into the rest of the hair while the hair is growing out. Or foil in some dark to the roots to start incorporating grey in to the rest of the hair. Good luck! Hope you can find an option that is good for you. :)

Angelcrest i have been where you are. Its a costly cycle. If you are willing to keep paying for the color, do as, BigRe suggests. After several different tries (didnt want to cut it off) I went the route of lightening my color (a light brown), and now only have to add blond/bleach and some golden every 6 mos to the weird part of my hair that has not grayed. You might have the vision that what we are describing is blond-blond, but on me it more a dark blond. The grow in line does not show, and i add color only because i think it looks better (i dont want to be so gray yet).

Hi Angelcrest: I’m doing the same thing. My grey is currently 3 (short) inches. I quit coloring in March, cut 12 inches off my hair, went to see Julie at Saigon in the junction and had it foiled. I see her every 3 months to have another 2 inches cut off. She is reasonably priced but it’s still expensive. My hair is dark brown and the foils helped lighten the length that is still colored. My next visit is coming up and she will put ashy streaks in it. I mostly wear my hair in a ponytail or bun and that help disguise the gray. It’s going to be a long process! Best of luck. Don’t give up.

Thanks all–so appreciated. I knew it was going to be a trek, and it will probably look yucky for awhile. (Like now. Not so cute.) I will not do it myself, so definitely looking for a

    salon.

I think Illusions (where I go, but not for color, and WSB sponsor) does free consultations. You could always call and confirm that, and go in to see what they recommend. http://www.illusionshairdesign.com

I’m totally salt & pepper now and have not dyed my hair. I was always afraid of what would happen if I wanted to stop doing it. I know a friend of mine chose to go with a buzz cut to get the color out of hers. Not everybody’s choice though. Good luck figuring it out!
