Do any old school West Seattlites remember this store? A post in “I Lived in West Seattle Before It Was Cool” (on Facebook) jogged my memory a little bit. You marked the prices on products with a grease pen. I asked my mom if she remembered it but she wasn’t a lot of help.

And you bagged your own groceries in paper bags! I loved going there with my mom when I was a kid. I got to bag the goceries and in my own little head would pretend I worked there. heehee

Yes! We had two Prairie Markets in the area. One where PCC is, (previous to that, it was a QFC, back in the ’60’s, maybe into the ’70’s).

The other, took up the entire building that Schuck’s is in, on 17th & Roxbury, in White Center. Don’t remember how far back that one was a Prarie Market, but I think was one into the ’80’s. Didn’t really notice when I passed by the one on Roxbury about 11 days ago if the sign has been repainted, but in maybe the last year or so, an earlier “paint over” on the sign had faded enough, to partially expose the Prairie Market name.

We used to go to the one where PCC is now all the time. I remember riding around on the big dollies they had instead of carts, and that mom always had to dig around through the big box of grease pencils before she found one that actually worked to mark the prices on things. They had a big bin of cardboard boxes just inside the door, too, which you could use to “bag” your groceries instead of bags.

I remember going to Prairie Market with my Mom when I was younger. We would go every two weeks. We would get the flat bed cart and load it up with boxes and mark our own prices. I can remember getting home and unloading all the boxes and then my brothers would get up and eat all the cereal. I keep telling Mom now that it was so unfair to let them sleep while we had to bring everything in and put it away.

One of my favorite memories of my Mom and I having special time together. :)

I remember the Prairie Market where PCC is now. I always thought it fun as a kid to mark your prices yourself. I also liked the cart contraptions. I remember when it was QFC, too. My parents would wait until after 11am to go grocery shopping so that you could also buy beer with the groceries. Used to be some weird law about that.

I remember shopping at the WC one. I might even still have spices from there :-0
