Hey there,

Just popping in to note that that Adept Pest company doesn’t seem to have a business license for the city of Seattle. I was going to give them a call a couple of months ago when this poster raved about it. Did my usual contractor license check and I couldn’t find this company.

It looked, if I recall, like he is out in Snohomish or Renton??? I am not sure, but I am pretty sure he’s not paying Seattle taxes. So heads up. I don’t hire cheaters. How does one get money back if a contract is broken or harm/damage is done under such circumstances? I wouldn’t take the risk of supporting an illegally operating business for any contractor here in the city personally but your mileage might vary.

But anyway, I found a solution. Before I ever found another viable contractor, I did some research on my the tiny ants and bought diatamaceous earth and a turkey baster on recommendation from a nursery. Filled the baster with powder and shot it under all of the quarter round and in every space between wall and floor, pipes, etc. Then vacuumed the extra and Bingo! They haven’t been back! Woot! Good luck!

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot something I was told about these damn ants. Sweep up kitchen crumbs and dog kibble everynight and around the garbage can. They smell it. It was important to me to get rid of them because they are soooo gross, so I hired a housecleaning service to come in and clean everything ONCE, then I started a new habit of not being a slob and began sweeping. So yeah, not living in a pig sty is as important as the powder in the floor boards, if you ask me.

rose geranium, I think you’re wrong about Adept Pest. John has one of the busiest and most respected pest control businesses in the area, and numerous raves here on the WSB. He is out of Renton – are you saying he can’t work in Seattle if he’s based in Renton?

Hmmm. Well, first of all, I know I am right about diatomaceous earth. I wasn’t asking you for confirmation, if I gave that impression. I already consulted multiple experts. I have no idea who you are except you are the person I seem recall as the only person who recommends this company. But I could be wrong. I don’t really care about this at all. Just trying to offer additonal, accurate information.

As I stated, I did not see a Seattle business license. If he does a significant amount of business in Seattle, I am guessing the city wants their cut for that privilege. I just looked at his website again to check myself and there is a Seattle address and phone number. That’s why I checked for the business license. Logical and reasonable to do for all business transactions. But, here’s the thing. My common sense is much cheaper. Diatomaceous earth is even cheaper.

Nobody needs to be hired. Just clean up your garbage and spread some powder around the crevices. End of story. Ta ta! Back to my plants….

We used Borax along the outside of our building, diatomaceous earth on the inside – rubbing it into the wood floors and under the base trim. We also used Cornstarch as bait on the outside. It’s been about three weeks and we occasionally see an ant or two but that is it. Our building has many dogs who come and go so had to be safe for them.

I have not used John of Adapt before but I have heard wonderful things about him not just from people on this blog but also from people I know personally. He seems to be skilled, fair in price and able to do things as non-toxic as possible.

Cinnamon is a good deterrent. Ants hate it. Spread it out along the edges of the room and you can watch ants pack their little suitcases and head outside.

dhg, John actually told me about that one, and it does work. I put it along exterior doors. There is also a new, non-toxic slug repellant on the market that uses cinnamon. I think WS Nursery is selling it.

I hope this puts the matter to rest. Frankly, I’m appalled that rose geranium’s comments were allowed to stand, despite being reported to the editor. These comments not only border on slander, but are in violation of WSB rules.

Snark is one thing, and we have plenty of it here. However, to recklessly disparage a highly respected business with loads of West Seattle followers is despicable. Perhaps rose geranium just didn’t read the rules; it was his/her first post, after all. Even so, I can’t think that this is the best way to introduce yourself to the WSB community.

OP: diatomaceous earth, I found a 4 pound bag at Home Depot for about $8 (it’s wijth the bug spray stuff). The lady there said it’s exploding in popularity this year specifically as a natural pesticide, they can hardly keep it in stock. You can use it inside, outside, it takes care of ants, aphids, silverfish, slugs, etc and it doesn’t bother worms. There is a food grade version as well, so it’s totally safe.

An extra bit of trivia: they commercially mine it in Quincy, near the Gorge. That’s where the name ‘Silica Road’ came from. So feel good, you are probably supporting a local guy in some way.
