JenVMemberthere’s Eats Market Cafe – that’s not fast food..but that’s the only one. I agree – even if it were some crappy chain like the Keg, it would be nice to have an option down there! just please…no Applebees.

maplesyrupParticipant5 minutes away in White Center you have tons of options that are neither fast food nor crappy chains.
:)

beachdrivegirlParticipantthere is a sub shop too.
i actually hope that all chain restaurants stay away from west seattle. we have so many local restaurants that are all so good I would hate to have a chain restaurant come in & take away their business.

JoBParticipantI know they aren’t steak.. or even pancake houses…
but there are more food options at Westwood Vilage than Eats Market Cafe (which is good) and McDonalds..
The pizza place and tex-mex place in Westwood Village aren’t exactly fast food… nor is the smoothie place…or the Thai restaurant…
Someone else will have to connect with the names of those places, but i can vouch for the food… having eaten in all of them… even McDonalds.. the pups love drive thru:)

guidosmomMemberDP tried to eat at that sub shop about a year ago. 2 teenagers were working there and didn’t want to take her order or make a sandwich. They had better things to do like texting and talking on their cell phones. After trying to get a sub for a few minutes she ended up just walking out. Neither one of us have been back since. Hopefully there are new people working now.

maplesyrupParticipantThey used to have really surly employees but the last time I went there, maybe 2 mos. ago, the employees were very nice.

luckymom30ParticipantForgot there is a sub shop at Westwood Village but I still consider that fast food. It would be great if a local restaurant were at Westwood Village, I agree I am not for chain restaurants being in Westwood Village, our family does not go to McDonalds, KFC or most of the other chain fast food restaurants.

JenVMemberthe Keg would be ok – there was a Keg there before, years ago. It had a great bar, which is the only reason I ever went there. But, if you put a restaurant with a BAR in WWV now, people will cry about the CHILDREN. Wont SOMEONE think of the CHILDREN?
Personally, I think we need a movie theatre there!

LindseyParticipantReally? Strip malls and bad food go hand in hand. Or is WV not a strip mall? To me, it might as well be. What percent of businesses there are local/non-chains? I’d expect the restaurants to be of the same quality.
Chains: Target, Dress Barn, Barnes and Noble, Marshall’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Pier 1, QFC, Staples, Jamba Juice, Payless, Radioshack, etc.
It’s also not too pedestrian friendly, so it makes sense that the fast-food drive through chain does well there.
haha JenV!!

datamuseParticipantI’d be more interested in restaurants in WV if it were more pedestrian-friendly, for sure. As it is, I find WC easier to deal with, and better food selection to boot.
The Thai place is…Vatsana’s? Something like that? I’ve been there a couple of times and it’s okay, but I’m extremely picky about Thai food and would rather drive to Kaosamai in Fremont. (Still haven’t tried that place in WC, though.)

FullTiltParticipantVatsana Thai, Eats Market, Giannonis are all at Westwood. As far as the sub shop goes, last time I was there the guy taking my order, who I think was going to be the one making my sandwich, scratched at his groin while I was ordering. I canceled the order and he responded with a “whatever”. Have not been back.
I even called to try and talk to a manager, cause that is what I would like if it happened in my place, and I was told that the manager was never there. Nice.

flowerpetalMemberEwww, FT! That would be about the time I would call Public Health. Sounds like the sub shop needs some educating.
What would make Westwood Village “more pedestrian friendly?” I walk there frequently, not for dinner, but for other shopping. What specifically would make it better for posters who have made those claims.
The only non-chain anything that I can recall at Westwood is Wyatt’s Jewelers. I am more OK with chains that sell merchandise than I am with chain restaurants. It seems that the quality of chain restaurants can be unpredictable.
October 21, 2009 at 8:03 pm #680424
KBearParticipantFlowerpetal, I would say the quality of most chain restaurants is quite predictable. Predictably mediocre.

flowerpetalMemberBingo!!! Thanks KBear.

DBurnsParticipantVatsana Thai, Eats Market, Giannonis are all NOT chains – we are independently owned and operated by West Seattle families.
One of the problems is that malls really want chains in them so that they are attractive to general public and so that in the event the mall would be sold, the perceived value is higher with well established chain businesses. Also, the rent at malls is typically a lot higher because of the inherent traffic, free parking, security, signage, etc. But believe me, it’s a challenge to exist as an independent in a group of chain businesses and this is likely why there aren’t more of us there. The advantage is that you can come and park once and get fries, pizza, tacos, cupcakes and eggrolls!

datamuseParticipantFlowerpetal, just about every time I walk from Rite Aid or QFC over to Target I nearly get hit crossing one of the streets. For that matter, I’ve nearly been hit by other drivers when navigating WV in my car. The road layout there just seems really bad. Or else I’m invisible…
At minimum I’d like them to put up stop signs, instead of painting the stop stripes which wear away after a year or so and are invisible on dark rainy nights anyway. Repainting the crosswalks before they disappear entirely would be nice, too.
