charlabobParticipantThis is starting to sound like “Left, Right, and Center” but I have to second NR’s recommendation for “Why We Fight.” I read the description on IMDB and it sound absolutely amazing! The reviewer had me when they said (paraphrase) it’s like a Michael Moore documentary without the baggage :-) Thanks, NR, it’s moving to the top of the list too.

AnonymousInactiveKaleigh, I loved The Station Agent. Quirky indie movies are the best and anything with Patricia Clarkson.

AnonymousInactiveCharla – If your still interested in movie recommendations, I have another good one!
Innocent Voices. It’s a foreign film and VERY good!
It’s pretty powerful!

charlabobParticipantThanks, NR — I just added it to the NF queue and moved it up to #4.
We watched an odd combo of films and movies this weekend. I liked all except the “Best Seller” — There Must Be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis *and the sound track* were amazing. The movie was too long and too, um, strange????
The rest: (Recommended by at least one of the charlabobs)
Juno (I didn’t expect to like it — I loved it and actually bought the really silly soundtrack)
The United States of Leland — Another teen angst movie; much bleaker than Juno. Rented it because of Kevin Spacey — loved it for him and everyone else. All villains — none could be written off.
Gone Baby Gone — recommended here by NR and others — again, I was blown away.
Ambivalent — Bob Loved — Charla loved/hated: Sweeney Todd — loved the play (saw it 3 times) — loved Johnny Depp — in this case, less might be more — a little too realistic, the blood and gore.
Next in the queue —
Lars and the Beaautiful Girl — recommended by a friend and starring Ryan Gosling, the star of the United States of Leland

AnonymousInactiveThat Lars movie was one I didn’t expect to like. I thought it was interesting. I would recommend seeing it.
I did not like Juno. I thought the girl (or the girl the actress was playing) was annoying. I hated her attitude for some reason. I thought the concept of the movie was great, but, again, didn’t care for the girl (actress or character – not sure which).
Glad you likes Gone Baby Gone. Still one of my favorites this year.
I will look forward to checking out the United States of Leland. Thanks for the recommendation!

WSMomParticipantRecently I read “Into the Wild” then watched the movie. I found the book compelling. I like Jon Krakaur’s writing style, very personal and conversational. I thought the movie was well done. The anguish his parents and sister went through was profoundly portrayed in the movie. The book focuses on examining the inner workings of Chris McCandless’s mind and having that information made the movie more interesting for me.

TheVelvetBulldogMemberOver the weekend I watched both “Into the Wild” and “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.” ITW was great, but I couldn’t stand “Devil.” I fast-forwarded through most of it. An opening shot of naked Philip Seymour Hoffman and downhill from there. (And I’m a Hoffman fan!)
.
If you don’t mind subtitles I heartily recommend: The Chorus (French) Tsotsi (African) The Tiger and The Snow (Italian – Roberto Benigni) These are some of my favorites from the last year. And going back a little further: Motorcycle Diaries – an absolute must-see with an awesome soundtrack, and The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill – fantastic storytelling.

AnonymousInactiveWild parrots was fascinating wasn’t it. Charla, I liked Lars too. If you’re a fan of odd, it does it well.

charlabobParticipantWild Parrots was *wonderful*. Bought the book too and loved it. I actually saw the parrots a lot when we lived in the bay area — one of the “not you eithers” lived in their neighborhood.
A friend recommended Lars Friday and when I saw United States of Leland *and* that the same actor was in it and Lars, I moved it to the head of the list.
NR, I suspect you either love or hate Juno — I liked the actress, the character, and the writer (Cheyenne somebody or other, who won an academy award.) They’re all pretty strange. I saw the actor interviewed *a lot* when the movie first came out and she seemed so, um, normal — unlike US kid actors, she was amazingly unpretentious.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of Leland – I suspect it, too, is a love or hate deal. Some IMDB reviewers complained that it was not very realistic (duh). Others raved.
Devil was on my friend’s list too — I’m a sucker for Philip Seymour Hoffman, though I never thought of him without clothes. Saw him in Charlie Wilson’s War a couple of weeks ago and loved him and the movie — though I didn’t recognize him at all at first. Will I recognize him naked?
FINALLY, we both loved Into the Wild….I can’t quite understand why.
This weekend, for sure, Sex and the City!!!! On the big screen! (We were atypical addicts of the TV series.) Seattle Film Festival in town and we go to Mass Marketed Movies. Go figure.

JeannieParticipantI adored Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (I live with a similar parrot, the cutest bird in the world). And I’ve seen the “celebrity parrots” when I visited San Francisco. For kids, a very cute movie about parrots is “Paulie.” I admit I loved it, too. It came out several years ago.
Finally, a wonderful movie to watch at home over several nights: The Best of Youth. It’s an Italian movie about two brothers over the course of several decades. Love affairs, politics, family … it covers everything. Excellent acting, gorgeous Italian locations, etc.

TheVelvetBulldogMemberJeannie: I’m sold! Just added “Best of Youth” to the Netflix queue.

charlabobParticipantWe’re watching Lars and the Real Girl right now — it’s amazing; we definitely (both) recommend it. Among other things, it’s a story of community :-)
Meantime, get the Juno soundtrack (or listen to cuts of it and other things from the lead http://www.kimyadawson.com/
and the band, Moldy Peaches, http://www.moldypeaches.com/
You can find cuts, lyrics, and a journal — they’ll be at the Cap Hill Block party in July. :-)
