GrungyCMemberMy wife and I have decided to try to get out of the apartment and into an actual house. (If all goes well, that is.) We’re investigating local lenders/brokers, but would love recommendations from others in the neighborhood. Looks like the last time this subject was breached was five or six months ago. Any new input?
A couple of people we’ve spoken with seem like possibilities: Wendy Schuler (Seattle Mortgage) and Rob McAllister (West Seattle Mortgage). Anyone had experiences with them?
Thanks so much!

bluebirdMemberJust finished working with Rhonda Porter at http://www.mortgageporter.com She lives in West Seattle and is part of a family run business. There aren’t enough superlatives. Excellent treatment from beginning to end. If nothing else, read her real estate blog. She writes columns on all aspects of the transaction. Helpful no matter who you use. I’ve even seen her quoted as an expert in national reports.

WSBKeymasterAnd Rhonda is a longtime WSB sponsor and, even before advertising here, participant. We haven’t had occasion to use mortgage services since long before we met her, but as Bluebird mentions and we have written before, she shares her expertise publicly and also has been quoted nationally.

jissyParticipantHands down, ALL DAY LONG, I cannot recommend Deanne Sposari (M & T Mortgage) more highly. Her cell # is 206-919-3027 and has an office just past the Junction. I’ve done probably 6 transactions with her and she gets the job done in a very easy and understandable fashion.

alki_2008ParticipantHave people found that working directly with banks got them worse deals than working with mortgage brokers (which is sounds like most of these recommendations are for)?
Just curious, as I had always assumed that using brokers would be costlier because the brokers have to get some type of commission from the deal?

GrungyCMemberThanks for the info! Sounds like Rhonda Porter has many fans. We’ll get in touch.
Great question, alki. Our research makes it seem like the cost may be similar for either lender type, just weighted differently. In fact, the good faith estimates we’ve gotten are all pretty different, but the total costs stay pretty close.

marc123MemberI had a great experience using Caleb Smith, 206-618-0087, with Guild Mortgage. I know at least 6 other people who have also used him and all have been very happy with his service and the results, many times saving people (inlcluding myself) money. Here is a URL for his page on the Guild website, I encourage you to check him out. Good Luck! http://www.guildmortgage.net/calebsmith

welovewsMemberWe checked rates online at several banks and got two good faith estimates from brokers, and West Seattle Mortgage was by far the best. Rob was able to beat the nearest competitor’s rate by a full quarter point. We expected to pay higher fees for the lower rate, but the fees were significantly less as well. It seemed to good to be true, but our home just closed and everything went really smoothly. This was our third experience getting a mortgage and Rob was the most professional and responsive broker we’ve worked with. Lowest rate, lowest fees, and best service! We highly recommend him.

ktmehanMemberAlso highly recommend Rob McAllister @ West Seattle Mortgage. Just finished a refi w/him – it was smooth, painless, & low fees, rate. Plus he was v. patient answering my many, many questions throughout the whole process. Like learning to speak Greek – at least to me!
