I’d like to volunteer in the West Seattle/Seattle area. I’m not working right now and have lots of time to help out. My restrictions are that I can’t do computer work or heavy lifting.

Does anyone know of any volunteer opportunities that last longer than a day or volunteer orgs that need help more than once or twice a week? I’m looking for feedback from people who have had a successful volunteering experience – I’ve applied to several volunteer positions through volunteermatch.org and haven’t been hearing back from people. Some say they will send me an application and I never receive one. Thanks for any help!http://www.hotwirecoffee.com/

Well if you like cats there are 2 local organizations: Friends of Animals, they always need help with cleaning the cages at Next to Nature and petting cats. FCAT always has cats that need to be petted ect. I am sure the local shelters could use help. I am sure senior citizens could use some company. I don’t know much about volunteermatch.org but surprised that no one has called.

    Good Luck

I’ve volunteered for WestSide baby a couple times – when they’ve posted ‘calls for help’ here on the blog. They also have regular sorting times for clothes, toys, etc. and are always looking for more help.

Many of our West Seattle park clean up projects have events scheduled on a regular basis, so you could check the events calendar at Green Seattle Partnership and drop in for a work party, there are always tasks that don’t include heavy lifting. http://greenseattle.org/events

If you are interested in Emergency Preparedness, and would be willing to stay involved even after you go back to work, you can contact me about getting involved with the West Seattle Emergency Communications Hubs, at cbarker@qwest.net

There is an upcoming training for volunteers to help assure that the 2010 Census counts everyone. The training is Saturday, February 6 at the Jefferson Community Center. If you want to know more (anyone!) or receive the flyer, email makeourcommunitycount@gmail.com

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for training participants.

And here’s another opportunity to help children in West Seattle. Regretfully, the training occurs on the same day as my above post.

The Seattle Tutoring Coalition is hosting an All City Tutor Training on Saturday, February 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. at Aki Kurose Middle School. The tutoring coalition is comprised of many different groups and is hosted by World Vision. Contact STC@worldvision.org or 253 815-3066.
