The short answer is yes, low enough frequencies in sound can propagate through the earth. It’s a phenomenon known as infrasound. It’s generally less that 20Hz and requires a substantial sound pressure for it to be detected by people. So, there’s that.

There is also the WS Hum, a hum that many have heard on and off for many years with no definitive source.

When we moved to West Seattle and rented a house down by the ferry dock, there was a low frequency sound that came and went with the arrival and departure of each ferry…could the “WS Hum” be as simple as that?

mark47n, What could make that infrasound sound, could it be from the neighbors Solar Panels?

sbone, She has lived in this home since 1958/1959 and it’s right above the Ferry Docks and she swears up and down it is not the cars loading and unloading, it is not the ships going by on the water… it has us stumped and we’ve been hearing about this “hum/sound” from her for way too long. :>(

The hum heard from incoming and outgoing ferries is the sounds of the engines and screws of the ferry in the water. Under the right conditions it can induce sound into the earth, just like you walking on it, but with more pressure Not the Hum.

The hum is NOT infrasound, solar panels, 5G, net metering, fish, or the like. It’s the vacuum pumps and/or compressors used to load and unload the barges at CalPortland, formerly Glacier NW. This is definitive. There has been quite a lot of investigation into this.
