dee kalaniParticipantI was walking my dog one day up on California Ave., someone mentioned that there was a enclosed off leash dog park nearby. Does anyone know about this?

G RParticipantIndeed! Westcrest Park @ 9000 8th Ave SW. You can go to seattle.gov Seattle Parks website and learn all about it. Come join us…we have a great time at the dog park! Woof:)

JanSParticipantbut, no, there is nothing closer to West Seattle proper/California Ave. SW than that.

dee kalaniParticipantThank you! My dog is friendly but I need to socialize her more, and she will take off if she sees a cat or squirrel. I will feel more at ease with the area enclosed! I will check it out this week! Tail waggin lol

As you just stated, your dog needs to be more socialized.
PLEASE be careful. That park does not have a very good reputation as far and owners go.(not controlling theirs dogs)
Dogs will “pick out” your dog. So I am just wanting you to be aware for you and your dog.

G RParticipantDee Kalani,
As with any dog park there might be a random incidence where owners/dogs are misbehaved. As a rule Westcrest has a very good community of dog owners. The best advice at any dog park is to walk. Don’t stand idle expecting your dog to like everyother dog, or everyother dog to like your dog. Just like people…you don’t have to like everyone.
The best behaved dogs have the most intuned owners. Pay attention and everyone will have a great romping time.

hopeyParticipantIf you were north on California Avenue, they were probably talking about the fenced yard on Hanford just east of California. That is NOT a dog park (even though it seems everyone in the neighborhood treats it like one) — it is part of the West Seattle High School property. I have actually seen WSHS football players doing exercises there in the fall. Besides, pets are not allowed on school property period, anywhere in the city. Westcrest is the only legal dog park here in West Seattle.

GoGoParticipantI have never had a problem with my two dogs at Westcrest. Sure there have been a couple of dustups, but people need to remember that dogs will be dogs. They will normally sort things out themselves. This does not include aggressive, unsocialized dogs, just the dogs I have been in contact with at this dog park.

dee kalaniParticipantThanks for all the the good advice, my plan is to go early to build up off leash interaction with less of a crowd. So far she has done well with other dogs on her walk, at the house, at the groomer’s etc. I got her from my friends Shar-Pei rescue group, she was a stray really don’t know her background so I just want to be cautious, and respectful.

smokeycretin9ParticipantAlso check Lincoln Park, E.C. Hughes, Roxhill, Fairmont Springs, and Alki Beach on nice days.
(snark over) :)

addParticipantWe love Westcrest Park and have never had any problems with aggressive or badly-behaved dogs, even on busy days. Good idea to go in the early morning, the dog-walkers and their large groups of dogs get there around 10am … not that I’ve had any problems with them, either, but it might be less intimidating for your pup to be there without the big packs at first. Have fun!!

gothfruMemberAs a bonus, Westcrest has a small/shy dog area at the top of the hill; that might give your pup some space before jumping in with the “big dogs.” I’ve seen a few dustups there, but nothing major and owners that pay attention to their pets seem to be just fine.

dee kalaniParticipantTop of the hill it is then, I will post after taking her there. Thanks for everyone’s input, very helpful!

PangolinPieParticipantI like Westcrest; I live near there and love dogs, so I walk over to see the happy dogs playing. I get some weird looks though, because I don’t actually HAVE a dog, I just like being around them. But it’s a great place to see pups romping, and sometimes a guy who flies his little remote-controlled helicopter over the field.

miwsParticipantPangolin, get yourself one of these for when you go to Westcrest, and the weird looks are sure to stop….
…..on second thought…. ;-)
