CreightonMemberSo I got a bid on a new (1,000 square foot) driveway recently, and it worked out to $14,600. Sounds like a lot to me. Is this what others have paid? Does anyone else recall what they paid for their driveway, or concrete patio to be poured? 14 grand for a slab feels like a lot.
The bid included tear out of the asphalt existing driveway, the 5/8 rock, and a of course expansion/contraction joints. Anyone have thoughts on this?

cjboffoliParticipantWell considering that it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion dollars for the mile of concrete that is the new Sea-Tac 3rd runway I’d say 14K is a heck of a deal.

What TheMemberCreighton – Can I land my plane at your house? I will pitch in for an Instrument Approach (GPS, NDB, VOR, etc. and hopefully not an ILS as those are quite spendy). I promise to only bring in light aircraft and not the heavies…

ZenguyParticipantDepends, is it paved with gold?

livingonthebeachMemberOK, sI may have my measurements off, so dont sue me. There are 9 square feet in a square yard, so you need about 111 yards of concrete. I recently purchased exposed aggregate from Stoneway at around $90 per yard. Not know if you need form work or curbing, your labor should be about $500 or less. And, not sure the location and where a pump truck is needed (if so add $400). And lastly would be the removal of the asphault which can be pricey. Many demo folks use King County in Woodinville which is much cheaper but there is a huge fee for hauling. So all in all, I would say it is a little high, but not outragous. Good luck.

WesCAddleMemberNDB? They still make those?

wsleeMemberWe tore out our back patio two years ago and found a great guy to pick it up. He took all of our large patio away for roughly $400; James at J & R Hauling http://www.pickupmyjunk.com . As for new, Stoneway did ours but the amount was part of a bid for a larger project so I don’t have exact amount. A neighbor used http://www.threeguysconcrete.com and another used Sposori Concrete. Good luck.
February 3, 2009 at 4:46 am #657024The for mentioned calculation of 111 yards is not a complete calculation. 1000 sq ft of surface area at the usual driveway thickness of 4″+/- equals 12.35 CUBIC YARDS of concrete required. In addition to the costs of 12.35CY’s of concrete, add in removal and disposal of old driveway, possible pump truck, form work, rebar/wire mesh, add mixture(s), exposed aggregate surface, labor, insurance and don’t forget business overhead. Obtain two more bids for the project, specify the same scope of work from all three contractors so they are all bidding on the exact same thing. DO NOT USE UNLICENSED AND UN-BONDED CONTRACTORS. If you do, you are likely condoning poor quality construction practices and asking to get burned.

celeste17ParticipantI agree with the unlicensed and unbonded contractors part. When we remodeled after my father died we decided to have our driveway done. The guys that did our chimney said they could do it and boy did we have to pay for that mistake. They didn’t know what they were doing they were reading a how to book to figure it our. They didn’t use the proper forms they didn’t pour a uniform thickness and other problems. We ended up hiring Bryant Concrete and the tore out the entire mess and redid it correctly. We did end of getting some of the money back from the other crew but still ended up having to pay for it twice. Call Ron Bryant of Bryant Concrete for a second quote. phone book lists the phone as 206-933-7836 but I remember another thread where we recommended Ron that the number was 935-7836. I will look for a card to verify the phone number.

allcomersParticipantNot one with a lot of experience but some random thoughts:
*$146/sq ft seems a bit high, but not absurd.
*from poster above, $500 labor for 1000 sq feet
seems too low to me.
*For the whole job, $90-$110 per sq ft sounds about right (pre sales tax).

allcomersParticipantOops, cant’ do arithmetic at night.
$14.6 / sq ft sounds a bit high (post sale tax).
$12/sq ft (post sale tax) sounds about right.

AnonymousInactiveA 1000 sq. ft. driveway is not a normal small homeowner job. For example, a ten foot wide driveway one hundred feet long equals 1000 sq. ft. That is a significant homeowner project.
I suggest you obtain bids from as many companies as will bid on your driveway until you are tired of receiving bids. Keep the requirements the same for all the bids so you can compare them fairly. Commercial contractors may bid on your driveway because it is large, so ask for bids from commercial contractors, too.
An asphalt driveway would be much cheaper, but as you probably know, there are tradeoffs.

beachdrivegirlParticipantWe did pavers about a month ago. Sounds about right. But I defin. would recommend getting a couple of other bids. When we did our project there was a variance of about 2K between all bids. We were able to negotiate a bit too by having numerous contractors bidding.

marc123MemberTry MPC Concrete at 26-229-2964. Max is the owner and will do a great job. He did my driveway when we lived on Vashon Island, it was also a large drive and the bid was far under 14k. Give him a call.
