BuzznoMemberHello everyone,
It’s my first post here and it’s under some weird circumstances. My dog Jasper was quick enough to snag a crow in our backyard because they were bugging him but he didn’t kill it but it looks like he broke it’s wing. It’s been in and out of our yard hopping around and somehow surviving for 6 days now. It has three buddies that are very protective of it and are going crazy every time we go outside. Does anyone know someone who deals in these sorts of things and is there anything we can do to get these crows to stop??? They are wreaking havoc in our yard!
Thanks for any help.

Talaki34ParticipantPaws: 425-412-4040 This is the direct line. If you get voicemail, leave a message and they will call you back.
I called them to make sure they were open.
Good luck!

kootchmanMemberI tried to save one years ago…. it didn’t make it through the night. Those crows… they didn’t go away. For YEARS when I walked out of the house they raised the alarm and cawed the entire time I was in the yard or on the porch. Make the catching anonymous!!! Or, you will have buddys for years!

hammerheadParticipantno go as of yet. Funny thing, the crow is 2 blocks away from where we are trapping 20 cats/kittens.
Ironic a dog did it this time not a cat.(Sorry Buzzno, just had to point it out)
Hope to hear from you some time today.

Side note, also 5 corners vet is “certified” to take in wild life. I think Lein can but they are not always open, and of course Seattle Animal shelter and again they are not always open.

mehud7ParticipantFive Corners at on 1st Ave. S and roughly SW 158th, in Burien. Sarvey picks up there. Don’t forget to leave a donation, they are much needed and appreciated by those who rescue.

BuzznoMemberUpdate: No sign of the crow last night or this morning. The last time we saw it was yesterday afternoon.
So after talking with someone from Paws yesterday and learning more about crows it’s quite possible that this was a baby that hadn’t learned to fly yet. I never saw my dog attack the bird, he was just standing over it and I assumed that he had caught it. It was hopping around our yard after that so I assumed it had a broken wing but the lady at Paws said it’s likely a baby. Then she asked if there are any parent birds following it and if it has been seen on anything off the ground. There are two birds following it and my kids saw the crow on our play structure yesterday about 5′ off the ground so it seems like it’s learning to fly a bit already.
I’ll keep an eye out for it still and if I see anything I’ll let you all know.
Thanks a lot for the help.

BuzznoMemberWell we got home this afternoon and the crow was in our garden! i was able to get a laundry basket over it and called hammerhead. She was able to get someone over right away and the crow is hopefully off to a road of recovery. Thanks for the help Hammerhead, we appreciate it.

hammerheadParticipantwell the little bird was a baby, learning to fly. my friend put it back, so try and keep the dog away. Crows are very smart, it will figure it out.
Actually 5 corners gave her a really hard time about it.

BuzznoMemberInteresting. Well thanks for trying. Why did they give you a hard time at 5 corners? My dog will be at my brothers for awhile so it should be fine for the time being.
July 1, 2012 at 3:18 am #762599
JiggersMemberThis crow is smarter than most humnns. Watch how it problem solves to get its food.

hammerheadParticipantthat is true:)

SonomaParticipantHammerhead, thank you (and Kootchman and Buzzno et al) for your compassion and knowledge. Crows aren’t the “cutest” of birds, but they are clever and resourceful, and they merit our respect.
July 1, 2012 at 12:54 pm #762602
kootchmanMemberThey are the funniest, most interesting, coolest bird in the world! Corvidae rock….

Talaki34ParticipantThank you to everyone who helped with the youngster.
Buzzno: Nature on PBS has two very good programs that gives us the opportunity to see who these magnificent creatures are. The first is about the crow and the second about his bigger brother the raven. One of the reasons why the young crow was on the ground is explained in the film.
Some of the research that is presented in the programs is actually from our own backyard which is very cool.
