I’m looking to bring home a 1966 Fiat 500. I am aware of the EPA and safety requirements including bumpers and seatbelts and all that. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with the importation of foreign vehicles and the problems one can face in getting them released through Customs and registered. Anyone have a tip or 2? Looking forward to cruising Alki in a sporty red death trap.

Bumping on the condition that if you bring it home, you’ll swing by sometime and show it to me.

I’d ask for a ride, but probably would not fit, and even if I could fit, I’d probably break the poor thing! ;-)

Any time, Mike! We actually had 4 adults in the car with no problems. I wouldn’t want to drive to Portland in it but for scooting around town it’ll be great! Parking spots that are too small will never be a problem again.

How fun! I love scooting around town in my little red 500. You will be surprised at how many Fiats are in West Seattle now. While not vintage like yours, they carry the same spirit. Good luck with getting yours home and wave when you pass by.

Thanks, Gen Hill, I checked out the site and even called to clarify “foreign registration” It turns out that it actually costs more to ship the car than it did to buy it. Working my way through the bureaucracy. It’s going to be fun once we get it home. Now that we got the cinquecento we plan to get an Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile. They are SO COOL! Suicide doors and a fold down roof.

You might call Big People’s Scooters down in Georgetown and speak with Victor. HE has imported man a Lambretta and Vespa scooter direct from Italy.

If you are going to put it in a container, throw in a couple vintage Ducati and Moto Guzzis for me please.

Been meaning to ask, but didn’t want to OT any threads you’ve commented on/started; any updates on the progress, 2MW?

Are we gonna see this little red classic zipping around the streets of West Seattle this summer, with hand-blown glass “fuzzy dice” hanging from the mirror? :-)

Man this thread dropped way down in much less than 24 hours!

Anyway, 2MW, my question was answered on another thread, and I also saw that you are working on bringing home yet another tiny classic!

This is all well and good, and I hope these both work out for you, and I’m very happy you have this opportunity, etc, etc.

But, I gotta say, what the HELL are you doing getting such small cars?

In the two to three times I’ve seen you face to face, I recall you being a bit on the tall side.

But then again, like a buddy of mine who is into hotrods has always said in regards to hotrods, and classics, that may be uncomfortable to drive or ride in; “It’s tough to be cool!” ;-)
