FranciParticipantWow their competitors sure put FedEx to shame.
I ordered a shirt on the 15th of December, the confirmation email said it would arrive on the 23rd. Shipping from Massachusetts, via FedEx still not here, latest update says tomorrow. However its in Colorado right how, doubt it will make that deadline either.
I ordered some new slippers on the 23rd from a different shop, not expecting to see them anytime soon. They were shipped via UPS from Maine and they arrived today! Happy feet.. :)

JanSParticipantI have something coming thru fed-ex, and received a message that due to severe weather in the midwest, etc., to expect delays. It might not be incompetency, just weather affecting ground transpo, and sometimes air.

FranciParticipantNot this time. Between the order date and the 23rd I was tracking the package and according to their own system it made it all the way from the east coast to Idaho! Then the next day it shows as being in New Hampshire. When I called to ask what was up the guy said it was never on the truck, so it just sat in a warehouse somewhere for over a week. Yes I know it’s Christmas, but that didn’t seem to hinder UPS from shipping a different package to me in 8 days that also came from the east coast! And was ordered 2days before Christmas! Essentially the same basic shipping in both cases, only difference is the shipping company.

anonymeParticipantAgree with Franci. My last FedEx delivery was 4 days overdue, while it sat in a warehouse. This has happened several times with FedEx, often using the weather excuse (even when it makes no sense). UPS has always been on time, although they did once deliver my package to the wrong house.

metrognomeParticipantI’m not defending FredEx necessarily, but there may be a more direct route from L.L. Bean or whoever in Maine for a small, lightweight package (envelope?) than there was for your other order.
the current logistics for most carriers, incl. USPS, is to sent it the fastest way rather than the shortest distance; oddly, routing a pkg from Spokane to a hub in Iowa and then to Seattle may be the fastest way.
also, the FredEx hub is in Memphis; if their planes can’t get in or out due to weather, it ripples through the entire country, just as it does for any airline.
and don’t forget the store/website you purchased from; they may have screwed something up. A large retailer that does a huge on-line business is probably paying much more attention to it’s shipping procedures and has probably negotiated guaranteed service from a specific shipper.
just wait ’til Bezos buys the fleet of planes he is considering; he’ll shake up shipping just as he has shaken up pretty much every industry he has touched, for better or worse, depending on your point of view.

JTBParticipantFranci, I tend to focus more on how a business responds to a problem rather than whether or not one crops up. With a big volume of business, you’re apt to have some problems. It’s certainly annoying when it’s your turn to be that customer.
I have an inclination to insist on not just getting a full explanation for how a problem occurred, but what measures are in place to prevent a recurrence or reduce the frequency of it happening again. It’s typically necessary to escalate the call to a manager to get a meaningful answer. But if you don’t do that, you don’t get to complain if the same thing happens again ;-)
What stands out is the comment that the item was never on the truck. There are too many check in points for that to make sense. Something was being scanned and logged. Did some paperwork become separated from the package?
In any case, FedEx should want to determine what happened and take measures to avoid something like that happening again. And they certainly owe you the courtesy to look into it a get back to you.

FranciParticipantJTB – that is probably what riled me more than anything. I do understand when things go wrong, but when I contacted Customer Service (NOT!), the guy said it was never on the 1st truck. I have no idea how it could log all those stops if it wasn’t. When I said the original delivery was due on 12/23 – he said there were no guarantees. Basically his attitude was it will get there when it gets there. Presumably it will arrive tomorrow!
I was left with the sense that whatever level of service this package was mailed with was lower than dirt to FedEx, they did not care. Hence I think that their attitude sucks. I’ve already written to the vendor and asked that they use UPS in the future.
If that is their policy they should NOT give an estimated delivery date.
