    I forgot my favorite!

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Thanks for that post, Dobro. Another unsung hero of important music gone. So sorry to hear of his passing. I’ll go dig out some of his stuff this weekend and hoist a toast. Thankfully he passed along his great musical genes to his progeny. Truly, a life well-lived.

Just as the Carthaginians hired mercenaries to do their fighting for them, we Americans bring in mercenaries to do our hard and humble work. I hope we may not be overwhelmed one day by peoples not too proud or too lazy or too soft to bend to the earth and pick up the things we eat.

    – John Steinbeck, ‘Travels with Charley’

outstanding book, well worth reading to get a perspective on American life from 50+ years ago before interstate freeways, commercial air travel and mega-corporations changed everything. Also recommend ‘Blue Highways’ by Wm. Least Heat Moon, who patterned the book after TWC.
