WestSeattleSteveMemberI’ve noticed recently that people use “West Seattle” pretty liberally as the neighborhood they live in. I recently looked up the boundaries of West Seattle and noticed that 35th Ave. S.W. is the border. So, do you live in west seattle according to this map?

beachdrivegirlParticipantYes, I live in West Seattle. Do you?
January 5, 2009 at 5:24 pm #653421
JenVMemberooh, it’s time for this tired song and dance again, about who is more superior because they live in what neighborhood. Fakers? Really? Heck, there are people who live in Palm Springs and Arizona who post here. West Seattle is a state of mind, brother! Although, having lived here for a long time, my idea of WS has always been water to West Marginal, Alki to Arbor Heights. We’re all stuck on this peninsula together.

KenParticipantThe divisions created for the city maps were for convenience rather than hard and fast borders.
Anywhere across the bridge from Seattle and north of the city limits is considered West Seattle based on historical documents. There are neighborhood designations created by real estate developers that still exist as neighborhood names.
I can throw a rock and hit 35th ave but the map sez I am in the Delridge neighborhood.
I don’t mind since both sides of 35th have the same percentage of morons, knuckleheads and twits.
Of course all the readers of WSB, where ever they are, are above average. :)

austinMemberAny map claiming that the west seattle golf course isn’t in west seattle is, for all intents and purposes, bunk.

roundthesoundParticipantI guess they should think about naming the West Seattle golf course the South Seattle golf course instead then. I think what really counts is what community you choose to participate in. You chose to ad the tag fakers to this post, really?
January 5, 2009 at 5:41 pm #653426
roundthesoundParticipantOf course the maps from the city clerks office include the following disclaimer “It is not designed or intended as an “official” City of Seattle neighborhood map.”.

AnonymousInactiveSeriously, fakers? What’s that about?
Wikipedia:
West Seattle, a hilly district in Seattle, Washington, encompasses all of Seattle west of the Duwamish River.
WestSeattle.com
Including these neighborhoods: “The Junction”, Admiral, Alki, Arbor Heights, Beach Drive, Delridge, Fauntleroy North, Fauntleroy South, Gatewood, Genesee, Harbor Ave, High Point, Highland Park, Lincoln Park, Luna Park, Morgan Junction, Pigeon Point, Roxbury, Schmitz Park, Sunset, Westwood, Youngstown

WSBKeymasterWest Seattle is from the Duwamish to Elliott Bay to Puget Sound to Roxbury. The city has these two odd “districts” into which it has divided West Seattle, the Southwest district and the Delridge district, for various purposes (such as district councils and neighborhood services offices). Bears no relationship to the fact that West Seattle encompasses the entirety of the peninsula, to the city limits on the south.

JoBParticipantWhew…
for a minute there i thought i had moved out of West Seattle :(
i have only recently started reading the tags…
i especially like monday morning bong hits on this one:)

bcollinsMemberLet’s vote some things out of West Seattle instead of checking green cards…it’s more interesting I think. As an example, I vote the steel plant (Nucor?) out. It’s loud and it would be nice to have tide lands in its place.

GenHillOneParticipantWS IS a state of mind –
*waving to k who provides us w/Palm Springs-WS comparisons* :)
Thanks for not rubbing it in (the weather) these last couple of weeks!
Anyone else here checking in from “off site”?
January 5, 2009 at 6:28 pm #653432
GenHillOneParticipantRoxbury, lowmanbeach? No Arbor Heights in that definition?
January 5, 2009 at 6:47 pm #653433
inactiveMemberGHO –
I’m not 100% certain, but I think that the city/county line jags a bit at the AH hood. It also jags off a straight line on Roxbury around Meyer’s Way.
January 5, 2009 at 6:52 pm #653434
mrhinehMemberOK, I’ll bite. Where is Youngstown (besides OH)? I prefer to think of Alki as the Hermosa Beach of WS :)
January 5, 2009 at 7:05 pm #653435
GenHillOneParticipanthmmm…well, I vote AH in! That White Center/WS line is so confusing. Typically inconsistent – AH Elementary is in the “WS South Cluster” isn’t it? I’m back to it being a state of mind :)
mrhineh, only point of reference I have is the Youngstown Arts Center that is on Delridge, basically across the street from the community center & park.

BayouMemberI personally don’t consider myself any less of a West Seattlite for not living west of 35th or north of Roxbury. I wonder how the boundaries will change if/when White Center is incorporated into Seattle. It is a strange border to say the least.
January 5, 2009 at 7:21 pm #653437
JoBParticipantbayou.. if i read the latest discussion correctly, it is more likely that white center will be incorporated into burien… though it will be an odd incorporation with the Roxbury boundary down the middle of town…
January 5, 2009 at 7:39 pm #653438
mellaw6565MemberEven if I did the Monday morning bong hits, I’d still wake up in W. Seattle – kind of like a “Groundhog Day” syndrome:)
January 5, 2009 at 7:40 pm #653439
JEMParticipantThere is a zig (or is it a zag) off of Roxbury. The city line is at Seola Beach Dr and 106th. The area west and north of there, while still “south of Roxbury” is inside City limits (Arbor Heights).

BayouMemberJoB, Unless I missed something this is the latest (Dec 22) that I’ve heard on the possible annexation:
“North Highline, one of the largest urban parts of King County that isn’t in a city, could be split between Seattle and Burien if the two city councils and voters decide that’s a good idea. Seattle would become the local government for White Center and neighboring communities in the northern portion of North Highline, and Burien would absorb Boulevard Park and other neighborhoods in the southern part. An estimated 33,400 residents would be affected.
The proposed boundary, tentatively agreed to this month by Seattle and Burien, would run mostly along South and Southwest 112th and 116th streets. The agreement defines how much territory each of the cities could annex through the end of 2011. After that, all bets are off.”
January 5, 2009 at 7:46 pm #653441
miwsParticipantDisclaimer under the map linked above:
“The Seattle City Clerk’s Office Neighborhood Map Atlas is designed for subject indexing of legislation, photographs, and other documents in the City Clerk’s Office and Seattle Municipal Archives. It provides a way to increase consistency in the way geographic names are used and to allow precise retrieval of documents concerning neighborhood districts. It is not designed or intended as an “official” City of Seattle neighborhood map.”

KatHPMemberThis topic (and the fact that it seems to be rehashed time and time again) never ceases to amuse me. Is there some particular reason I am supposed to care about the distinction of who lives on what side of what street? Do I get a west-of-35th discount on dog-walking services or something if I live west of 35th? Do I get free pudding if I live near Lincoln Park? Or maybe a free dinner at Jak’s if I live near Westwood Village?
Please, the suspense is killing me.
January 5, 2009 at 9:14 pm #653443
flowerpetalMemberSometimes we are not too original. Stay seated and we will rehash the Mayor, or dogs off leash, or WS bartenders, or, or, or…
Its a blog, its what we do. I’ll see you at Jaks I guess, I too live near Westwood! Whoo Hoo!
