UrbanFabulousParticipantMy husband is terrified of the dentist and needs someone who is gentle, patient, and will knock him out! Are there any dentists in the West Seattle area who do sedation/nitrous/Valium and are just wonderful to work with? We don’t have dental insurance, but can pay out of pocket.

junctiongardenergirlMemberI absolutely love my dentist at Alki Dental. I have a pretty big phobia about having dental work done, but the entire staff there has always been professional, calm, and respectful, and the setting is very nice. They have also given me nitrous when necessary, which really helps with my anxiety.

Genesee HillParticipantUrbanFabulous,
I think it may me a good idea to get recommendations on good local dentists in the West Seattle area, call their office, explain your husband’s situation, and ask the dentist if they will prescribe a couple of benzodiazipines to relax your husband. I am certain that many will. I am not talking about giving your husband a prescription for 30 Xanax, but a decent dentist will prescribe a couple. That has been my experience; for certain procedures, some dentists will do that as a matter of routine.
Find a highly recommended dentist, call the office, and explain the situation. I think you will have no problem.

LStephensParticipantDr. Irene Parkhill in White Center is a very gentle and understanding dentist. I’m sure if you called and discussed your husband’s fears they would help. Her office is a block south of Roxbury on 17th and the phone # is 763-0400.

RayneMemberGo to Dr. Bond @ Smiles by Bond. He does different levels of sedation from nitrous to conscious sedation (no IV though). He’s a really nice guy and his staff is very caring.

wrenMemberThanks everyone for the postings. UrbanFabulous I share your husbands terror of dentists and I need serious sedation. I need some serious work this spring. I would love it if you could post on your experiences.

shed22ParticipantI second Alki Dental! I don’t know about benzis, but they will gas you up if you need it. Super psychedelic light art will keep your mind busy. Great experience; I long for my next visit to the dentist’s office.

UrbanFabulousParticipantWren, we’ll let you know how it goes. I’m going to call around tomorrow. I want to find someone who will perhaps give us a discount for paying the bill in full at the time of service.

Genesee HillParticipantNitrous oxide is fine and dandy, but an appropriate benzodiazapine, prescribed by a doctor or dentist, is much better. I have been so gassed up it has been somewhat uncomfortable. I have actually asked the dentist to turn it down. “Never-never land” can sometimes be “wish I was back to earth land.” LOL. As Keith Jackson used to say: “Woah, Nellie.” Plus, nitrous oxide can also affect the people working on your teeth. That is not necessarily a good thing.

UrbanFabulousParticipantWren, here’s your update:
We decided to go with Alki Dental. They had great reviews and I knew their offices would be nice. We really couldn’t have picked a better dentist! The staff is amazing, comforting, and gentle. He had a 4 hour deep cleaning and he said it was the best, least painful cleaning he’s ever had! They doped him up nice and good, so he was quite relaxed. The next day he had no pain and wasn’t swollen. He didn’t even need heavy duty pain killers! We’ve been three times this week and this is after 20 years of him not going to the dentist. It’s amazing to see him trust a dentist and feel so much more comfortable with the process. Please go, this has been a great experience for both of us!

UrbanFabulousParticipantOh, and if you do go tell them Kevin Karasinski referred you! Then we get a referral credit. (Which would be really helpful since we’ll be putting this guy’s kids through college!)
