CallMeAlMemberJeezz…with all this WSB hate lately, I simply wanted to post a topic for discussion with a genuine question.
A neighbor who lives on my block allows his Great Dane to conduct his “business” on mine and any other property owner’s property. In between dry-heaves, I have cleaned up these unsightly messes before I, my wife, or children step in them.
How can I approach this in a ‘Minnesota Nice’ ‘West Seattle’ -type discussion without confrontation? I believe he is a renter, and there is an absentee landlord.

MargLMemberSeattle 911 blog on the PI just had someone ask this same question: http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattle911/archives/165516.asp

flowerpetalMemberThe Seattle 911 blog unfortunately did not give an approach that was friendly at all but presumed that there would be nastiness. Contacting animal control first or the KC Dispute Resolution Center are further steps that might not even need to happen.
Approach the offending neighbor with a smile and perhaps a compliment on his handsome dog. Suggest that you are guessing that he forgot to bring bags to pick up his dog’s poop and pull a few out of your pocket to offer to him. If he balks you might inform him that its the law to carry (and use) these whenever someone is walking a dog in the City. Nice usually gets nice in return.
If it doesn’t, then you have other steps as MargL pointed to. Digital cameras with the short video feature are wonderful things for documentation!

WS4funMemberMargL: Great website. Found the answer to many questions I’ve had but thought they were too insignificant to ask!

CallMeAlMemberThat seattlepi thread had great info., thanks! Truth is, I’m not angry…just slightly annoyed. I would not approach him with hostility, in fact maybe some plastic poo bags and a bottle of wine might be welcome. Nice gets nice in return. Agreed.

flowerpetalMemberOh I really like the addition of a bottle of wine. My mother always thought that a home made cake softened any difficult situation.

CallMeAlMemberIt worked! I went over with a bottle of Red, and had a pleasant discussion with him.

AdamOnAlkiParticipantSomeone publicly defecating and making everyone else look at it and smell its stink? Yeah, that sounds like Dane.

mrhinehMemberWhats wrong here is “Why is it only a $54 fine”?
When a dog’s owner can get a $500 fine for letting said dog go into Puget Sound in an unauthorized area (Lincoln Park), why isn’t dog poop at least the same fine?? I get so sick and tired of seeing poop on sidewalks, no less. Me thinks there needs to be a little more “bite” in that law.

CallMeAlMemberAre you tight with Dane Cook? Your humour seems eerily similar.

KBearParticipantI agree with #9. $500 fine PLUS 20 hours of community service. (Hmmm…. What would be an appropriate community service sentence for someone who didn’t clean up their dog poop?)
People like that make the rest of us dog owners look bad.

JoBParticipantmaybe i could just leave a bottle and some cups out on my parking strip along with some poo bags:)
just kidding…
gifts of food and drink do make what could be an uncomfortable conversation a lot more productive…
these days i suspect a bottle of red works better than a cake…
