SonomaParticipantNow, I’m all for drinking our Seattle tap water, but not when it tastes and smells like a swimming pool. Every couple of weeks, our water has a horrible chlorine smell and flavor that renders it virtually undrinkable. The problem can persist for a couple of weeks. Anyone else ever have this problem?

kootchmanMemberNo.. I thought the new treatment plant was using ozone not chlorine.

chrismaParticipantSimple carbon filter (like a Brita) will remove most of the chlorine from tap water (as will letting it stand in open air for 24 hours). Enough to make it taste better. Doesn’t really do too much for the VOC’s, but you don’t usually taste those.

SonomaParticipantThanks! Still seems odd that we have to put up with the icky smell and taste. True, it’s better than drinking water containing all kinds of nasty pollutants. A toast to our healthy additive, chlorine! Cheers!

KenParticipantA Brita really does fix the taste issue. I can’t do without it.

metrognomeParticipantyou should also let Seattle Public Utilities know when it happens; I think they do chlorinate the water in the reservoirs, but it shouldn’t happen as often as you report.

SueParticipantOh yes … the chlorine smell comes and goes, but can get so bad that I was gagging while trying to brush my teeth, just from the smell of the water. I have a Brita filter on my kitchen sink, and found a filter for the bathroom sink as well which I really like: http://tinyurl.com/75l5c77
(had no idea they even existed but was glad to find it) and also one for my shower: http://tinyurl.com/7zab963 This past week has been particularly bad with the chlorine smell.

stinaParticipantPCC sells a filter for showers that will remove all the chlorine. I have one and it works well.
There is also a bath ball somewhere that removes chlorine, but I haven’t tried it. It is still a pain though that it needs to be used at all.

chinookParticipantI’ve noticed the chlorine smell sometimes if I take an early morning shower though mercifully, not for awhile. Last night (September 29/30) The air outside and even in our house was completely saturated with the smell of chlorine to the point where I had to close all the windows. I assumed it had something to do with ‘purifying’ water but have never noticed the smell outside. Anyone else?
