I want to start swimming for exercise. I’d like something near the Alaska Junction. where do you suggest that I go? I don’t want to go somewhere too crowded or grungy. I am able to swim during the normal business hours on weekdays, so maybe that will help me avoid the crowds? do I go to a gym – and which one? Is there a place that not only has a pool, but also has a nice area with exercise/weight equipment? Thanks!

The West Seattle YMCA is great – it has everything you mention above. The pool doesn’t ever seem to be overly crowded during lap swim times. They’re a WSB sponsor so you can probably link to their website from their ad along the side of the blog.

    Jenny,

I’ve been swimming laps for years and I’ve swam at several WS locations. I’ve based ‘where’ on a couple factors: 1)Costs 2)Schedules, both your schedule availablity and the pool’s schedule of Lap Swim times.

I’ve swam laps at the SW Pool on Thistle, years of swimming at the Y, and currently now at AllStar.

I’m loving AllStar because of their pool schedule. Lap Lanes are always open – no scheduled ‘lap swim’. That works best for me right now.

If your day can work with a Lap Swims at the SW Pool, there are no joining fees, no commitment. Might be a nice way to see if lap swimming is for you.
