    Hi all.

    Great blog! Figured if there was anywhere I could get a question like this answered, this would be the place.

    So I would like to get my pups out on an actual beach. Anywhere around the West Seattle area has a ‘no dogs’ sign every hundred feet or so. Im curious as to why this is, but more interested in somewhere nearby that I can take my pup out on a beach. On or off leash, and I always clean up messes.

    Thanks for any info. Fingers crossed for snow!

    You may be responsible, but many dog owners are not, so there is a law. Beaches are used by people, families, children. And while you may pick up the poop, no one picks up the urine, and the sand becomes contaminated. It’s a simple as that. You wouldn’t want your children playing in a litter box, now, would you?

    while the fourth review has a hint that it’s OK at Lincoln Park because a lot of people do it, it’s not. It is a very popular complaint about Lincoln Park by many people.

    @JanS

    I understand. I was just curious as to why the entire area was off limits to dogs; was it a sanitation thing or a wild-life thing?

    I was just curious if there were designated areas nearby where you could take your dog onto the beach without breaking a law.

    Thanks.

    Its likely both, sanitation and wildlife..

    The closest beach with water access that I know of is the dog park at Magnuson Park on Lake Washington.

    Luther Burbank Park has an off leash area with access to the lake.

    Not West Seattle, but Double Bluff beach on Whidbey Island makes a great day trip. It’s a miles-long natural beach that is designated off leash.

    Laws against this in the city of Seattle are well justified, especially when you consider the huge numbers of canines (and the related waste) involved. The threat to wildlife is significant as well. I personally witnessed an off leash Labradoodle attack and kill a young cormorant at Lincoln Park. A baby seal was found there not long ago, determined to have been killed by a dog. Restrictions are to be expected any time you crunch large populations of any species together.

    A second for Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island. It’s just minutes away from West Seattle and has a terrific dog swimming area. Parking’s a bit scarce, but your dog won’t mind if you have to park in the far lot.

    I didn’t realize Luther Burbank had an off leash dog area. That is a lovely park, went to a wedding there last summer, and closer to WS too. ;)

    Another vote for Luther Burbank. If it’S not rush hour it is a very quick trip. For a variety of different reasons we don’t use dog parks other than this one, and on weekdays, especially mornings, there are very few dogs there. Often our dogs are the only ones swimming in the mornings, and in the afternoons there are often just a few others in the water.

    Also, when I’m on the eastside, I like to go to the Marymoor Dog Park. There are several water entry areas that water loving dogs LOVE to go into :)
