Food and wine around West Seattle: News ‘n’ notes

alkicrabfish.jpg

First, the food. Happened to notice this on the windows at Alki Crab & Fish at Seacrest – “all you can eat” nights, Tuesday for fish and chips, Thursday for prawns and chips. Since it’s Tuesday, thought we’d mention it, for anyone seeking dinner ideas. While taking the pic this morning (before AC&F was open), we also noticed a sign instead inviting people to be there for New Year’s Eve — “fireworks and fun”!

Now, the wine. Two items:

cheapwinestore.jpgFirst, a liquor license has just been approved for “cheapwinestore.com” at an address in a Gatewood residential neighborhood. The website at that address isn’t up yet, so we tracked down the e-mail address of its proprietor, Patrick Collins, who tells WSB they’re hoping to be up and running within a month or so, elaborating:

My wife Brandy and I though it would be a great idea to be able to offer good, really tasty wines at inexpensive prices. Wine appreciation really is on the palate of the “beholder” but we are putting together a selection of wines that we think really stand up to what most people will really appreciate. We will be shipping wines to all of the places that allow, and as we get into this a bit more, we will start to really focus on the great wines that Washington and Oregon have to offer. It has been a great project that my wife and I have really been able to have fun with!

wswc_logo_small.jpgSecond West Seattle wine note — WSB talked this week with the folks at West Seattle Cellars about what ever happened to their plan for a wine bar next door (the space that’s still covered with plywood). They say it got hung up in red tape, but they’ve got some other plans for the space now, including office expansion and possibly some additional retailing that complements wine (chocolate? cheese? etc.).

I love the fish and chips there!
    RE: West Seattle Cellars…

the owner, Bear, had some serious health issues that he’s (thankfully) slowly but surely recovering from. He’s an amazing man, and his family is equally as amazing. We’ve been long time supporters of his business. It’s an great place, with a staff that truly loves their wine, and everything that goes with it.

Bummer to learn that the wine bar is off, I was really looking forward to something like that opening in WS.

Thanks for checking into that WSB. I have been wondering what happened but I was always afraid to ask when I was in there… It would have been a great addition but hopefully everything works out the best for them.

My favorite F&C spot on Alki. I was there over the weekend. Off-season makes for very quick service. I think our order came in 5 minutes.

After reading Mr. Collin’s post about cheapwinestore.com, really all I can say is “really?”. Really!

I have to agree with grr re: what a great guy Bear is and wish Bear and his family well.

all you can eat fish and chips!

    “tis not a man…tis a remorseless eating machine.” …

  • Gatewood too December 19, 2007 (8:53 am)

Well, if I want *really* cheap wine I’ll just get Two Buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s. But if I want an amazing tasty bottle of wine for $8 or $9 that my friends think I spent $20 on, pretty sure I’ll keep going to West Seattle Wine Cellars (pssst: always check out the bins just in front of the tasting bar). Lately however, since every bottle in our cellar is a wine that we’ve “tried before” (thanks to WSC’s free Thursday tastings), we’ve been “forcing” our friends to drink the really GOOD stuff with us… heh.

Gatewood too – got any label recommendations from WSWC?

    West Seattle Cellars…
a great place for wine and wine tastings, a good opportunity to meet the neighbors. It’s way to rare these days to do things as a community. That place makes it possible.

Should shoot by for another bottle of Dead Horse.

Chas, just stop by WSWC and chat with whomever is there. They will help you find a bottle in your price range that you should like. Then you go from there. Why buy wine anywhere else?

  • grr December 19, 2007 (6:39 pm)

I second Al’s comments. The crew as WSWC know their craft. Just tell them what you like (or what food your having it with), give them a $$ amount, and let ’em have at it.

and yeah..that bin in front of the bar has AMAZING wine for not a lot of $$… Any of their ‘Small Vinyard’ labeled stuff is especially tasty.

boy, if they could get some stuff from Bainbridge Winery they’d be my BFF …yummy stuff…usually only sold over there :( Maybe I should go ask, huh

    :)

Sorry, comment time is over.
