The 5th annual WSB West Seattle Christmas tree price survey

treesgraphic.jpgWSB didn’t debut till Christmas Eve 2005, so it was too late for a Christmas tree price check that year, but we’ve done one every year since, dating back to 2006. So once again, by request, here’s the fifth annual edition – bigger and better than ever, thanks to the help of a Super Secret Tree Shopper who braved the downpours these past few days and sampled prices not only for trees but also for some of the other holiday trimmings. Disclaimer: You may find something different when you shop – we have no guarantee that prices and/or hours didn’t change the second our Super Secret Tree Shopper walked off the lot, or that they won’t change next week, or in the final days – this is just meant to be a guide, if you’re looking for help before figuring out where you’re going and how much you want to spend. North to South, here they are, after the jump:

The last couple of years we’ve been going to Home Depot — the trees are as beautiful as anywhere else we’ve checked out and by far the cheapest as well as closest to us.

We try to patronize local businesses instead of chains as much as possible, but after paying 4 times as much for a tree at a local merchant (albeit a gorgeous one), we pretty much have to go with the less expensive alternative.

Thank you TR!! This is so helpful, especially in this very lean year. Hmmm… I wonder if waiting til it’s a little closer to Xmas will see some of those prices drop.

I want to know who the “Super Secret Shopper” is!

  • Monosyllabic Girl December 10, 2010 (6:40 pm)

    *the West Seattle Nursery hours should be 9am – 8pm (not 8am – 9pm)

  • Sara December 10, 2010 (9:33 pm)

What about McLendon…they are usually pretty cheap.

I’m sure there are options in White Center, but in this case, since there are plenty of tree purveyors in West Seattle, we stuck to those. Might have to do a separate WC survey for our WC site http://whitecenternow.com … TR

Got a beautiful 7’ Noble Fir at E-Green Landscaping last night. Friendly staff, a great selection of fresh trees, low prices and delivery for $10. Best tree shopping experience I’ve had.

  • sam December 11, 2010 (11:08 am)

Cheryl- one thing with waiting IMO, is that the selection is more limited to really tall trees (that is what happened to us one year).

my preference is for short noble fir. the shortest one I could find last night at Tony’s was $ 60. we ended up finding a 5′ (or a couple inches shorter) tree at West Seattle nursery for $ 34.95, and it is beautiful.

  • Kelly December 11, 2010 (11:21 am)

E-Green is at 9010 Delridge. They have the best selection of trees at great prices! Jeff is very helpful.

  • add December 11, 2010 (4:21 pm)

We just bought a beautiful Korean Fir at e-Green … I told the owner about all the raves he’s been getting on the blog and he seemed pleased to hear about it as this is their first year selling trees! Right now there aren’t too many trees left, but still a nice option.

  • JD December 12, 2010 (1:22 pm)

Thanks to all those who’ve posted nice feedback
about us at e-green…we really appreciate it! I’m curious how many folks out there wait to the last weekend ( next weekend ) to buy trees? Since we’ve never sold them before, we’re just a wondering! Would love to hear your comments regarding that on here.
Still have some nice Frasier Firs ( similar to a Noble, but needles are softer and silvery on the
bottom ) and some very nice Grand Firs as well. Both types selections in the 6.5 – 8′ range. ONE Noble left perfect for someone in a townhouse or condo..it’s about 6.5′ and narrow..very pretty little tree.
    Here today until 4 PM

  • Theresa December 12, 2010 (11:21 pm)

Message to e-green – I do like to wait until last weekend. That way tree stays fresher as we like to leave our tree up until the 12 days of christmas are over (january 6th). Hopefully you will still have some trees.

  • Tree Person December 13, 2010 (9:48 am)

Theresa – no matter where you go, the trees on the lot have all been cut at the same time. Keeping them outside in the cold and humidity for a few extra weeks may keep them a bit fresher than bringing them indoors right after Thanksgiving but trees all die at the same rate when they get cut! So it really doesn’t matter how long you wait. Although if you get a living tree, it stays fresh forever…

  • MF December 15, 2010 (9:46 pm)

We got a great tree at West Seattle Produce! Bruce was awesome – super helpful and was great with our little daughter. As a bonus, we got yummy (and cheap) avocados! Highly recommend them.

  • JD December 17, 2010 (10:09 am)

E-Green’s closing out our trees Friday, Saturday ( and if there’s any left ) Sunday. We’ve still got about 20 nice Frasier (similar to Noble, but longer softer needles ) And Grand Firs ( sheared firs ) ALL Frasier are $35 including
tax and ALL Grand’s are $33 incl tax. Save up to
$20 off the original prices. Please bring
Check or Cash at these prices! These are all gorgeous trees, mostly 6-8′ and if you want one a
little smaller we’ll be happy to make one a little smaller! No rejects here, all beautiful Christmas trees. Open til 7 Friday, 9:30 am – 5:30 pm Saturday. Check back here Saturday eve to see if we’ll be open Sunday, and thanks for all your support of our first year tree sales.

  • CA December 17, 2010 (10:28 am)

We also got our tree from West Seattle Produce: a beautiful Noble fir cut on Monday. Bruce not only delivered it to the house (gratis) but brought it up to the deck to make it easier to get to the living room.

  • JD December 19, 2010 (11:18 am)

We’ve got about 6-8 really pretty Grand Firs left
here at e-green. $30 incl. tax ( cash/check ) takes your pick. 7-8′ and full, nice trees. We’ll cut one down smaller if you need a smaller
tree. Here Sunday until 4 pm or they’re gone!

Sorry, comment time is over.
