Advance helicopter alert: National Guard Black Hawk at JTF tomorrow

We have an advance alert from the Seattle Fire Department about a helicopter you might notice in the area tomorrow: SFD spokesperson Corey Orvold says a National Guard Black Hawk helicopter is expected to land at SFD’s Joint Training Facility on the southeast edge of West Seattle [map] sometime Wednesday. Orvold says the crew’s planning to land in order “to familiarize themselves with the JTF.” Firefighting is one of the roles Black Hawk helicopters have with the Guard.

I believe it was later in summer 2013, plus skimming the article related to the Black Hawks’ appearence back then indicates this was a separate incident, I was on the bus cruising through the adjacent Park and Ride.

There was a chopper there, maybe G-1 or G-2(?) doing rescue practice. There were 3 or 4 firefighters on a platform of some such, that was dangling well below the chopper, and well above the ground.

As I saw it swaying back and forth, I thought “No thank you. No way I could do that!”. But, I am very grateful there are people out there with the courage to do so.

From my perspective, and only a few seconds to observe, it appeared this was a totally flat platform. But, sometime later, I saw something somewhere that showed that there are “sides” that come up at an angle.

But still, “No thank you, there’s no way I could do that” ;-)
