ELECTION UPDATE: Lisa Herbold takes the lead over Shannon Braddock in West Seattle/South Park City Council District 1

(WSB photo from Election Night, Lisa Herbold & supporters viewing results. Little did they know they’d still be doing it 10 days later.)

Just in, this week’s last set of election results – and for the first time in the not-yet-settled City Council District 1 race (West Seattle/South Park), Lisa Herbold has taken the lead over Shannon Braddock, by 27 votes.

Lisa Herbold – 12,371 – 49.73%
Shannon Braddock – 12,344 – 49.62%

That’s a turnabout from the 18-vote lead Braddock held after the Thursday count. Today’s full results list shows 27,567 votes have been counted – that’s almost the entire number of “ready to count” votes listed by the county as of last night. At this point, a manual recount seems likely – here are the county’s rules and policies regarding recounts.

Ben Anderstone has been posting very comprehensive updates and math about this in the Seattle District 1 Facebook group, for the curious.

What are the trends on how many of the 398 unverified votes are likely to be verified? If 50% as Ben suggests, then yes, Braddock would need to get 56% of them. However, if 100% can be verified, she needs to get only 53.2% of them. Still, Braddock hasn’t even had anywhere near that high a return on any of the drops since the 4:30 PM on 6 November. That’s as far back as I kept track of the drop percentages. However with this small number of votes remaining, there could be an anomaly, I suppose. Really crazy that the two candidates should come that close in votes given total number.

Anyone who ever states that they are not going to vote because their vote doesn’t really matter better take a real good look at this race. This is a clear example of how every single vote really does matter!!

  • Lonnie November 13, 2015 (7:34 pm)

To all then may state they’re not going to vote because their vote doesn’t really matter need to take a really good look at this race to prove that each and every vote is vitally important and really does matter!!

Remember, Christine Gregoire won her first election by 129 votes (later changed by a judge to 133 votes). State-wide, that’s a far smaller percentage difference than this race will likely be. Vote!!!

Either candidate, half of West Seattle agreed more with the loser’s vision and agenda. I really hope the winner understands that she represents all of WS and not just the half that voted for her. “The people have spoken” is a great way to be divisive for an already divided population.

    Bummer

IIRC, usually it’s the candidates and their campaigns that push pretty hard to track down remaining unresolved ballots, but I probably only hear about that after the elections people have used the e-mail/phone info on the envelope to ask for a “repair”.

LOVE this photo; that’s Lisa’s daughter and granddaughter right behind her

Jon, it’s not “half of West Seattle,’ but a quarter, since more than half of the registered voters in West Seattle didn’t vote at all.

    Y A Y — Lisa!!!

jon: and i hope that whoever wins keeps in mind that she represents district 1, our values, and our view of this city above those of selig, steinbrueck, and the other self-entitled, pampered rich folks that have been running seattle for the past 30 years.

  • RichWSeattle November 14, 2015 (11:10 am)

What Lonnie and abovealki said. Vote!

  • Diane November 14, 2015 (11:43 am)

wait a minute; Peter Steinbrueck is one of the good guys

it’s true, there have been a lot of rich folks “running Seattle” for way too long (actually it’s a fairly small clique of developers/architects/lawyers who build most of the towers downtown; you mentioned Selig; yep he’s one)

    @diane.

Whose going to pay for all the social programs, transit, and wages when the “rich” people are run out of Seattle. People always complain about the 1% controlling 99% of the wealth. Who do you think pays 99% of the taxes?

  • Not M November 14, 2015 (2:22 pm)

@M: If you believe the richest 1% pay 99% of the taxes, I’ve got a Nigerian prince with a financial problem who needs your help. Also, no one suggested running the rich out of Seattle, just reducing their colossal influence on local issues.

  • Diane November 14, 2015 (4:05 pm)

    thanks Not M; totally agree

  • Rick November 14, 2015 (4:24 pm)

Can we find a way to blame George W for this?

  • Mcelada November 15, 2015 (7:24 am)

Lisa Herbold campaigned to represent the people of West Seattle.
Braddock campaigned to use the people of West Seattle to jump start her own political career.

Talk about every vote counting. There’s a close race in Burien that was only two votes separation Nov 6: http://b-townblog.com/tag/election-results/
Progress Austin Bell is widening his lead over conservative Darla Green.
