West Seattle weekend scene: Bike-trail cleanup volunteers brave the wind

This morning’s gusty wind and occasional rain didn’t daunt hardy volunteers who showed up to clean up the bike trail beneath/north of the West Seattle Bridge. This is the cleanup organized by Dave Winters of Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsor), an avid bike rider, who’s at right below with his bike-riding partners Scott and Valerie Schorn:

A few other cleanups were scheduled today elsewhere in our area – including one at WSHS until 1 pm, and a Green Seattle Day hub in the West Duwamish Greenbelt; haven’t been able to check on those yet, but we did get word (thanks, Mark!) that the Friends of Lincoln Park event was postponed.

This was a great way to spend the morning and the amount of Styrofoam packing pieces we picked up was alarming!

Wait a second, kjb you were actually able to pick up those evil little B*****ds in the high winds?!? ;-)

I was first introduced to Styrofoam packing peanuts 30 years ago, when I worked at a street level parking facility, and the building next door had shops in it that would get regular deliveries of products with the peanuts as packing.

They would often be dumped loose in the dumpster, rather than securely bagged, so many of them would end up in the alley, (which we used as overflow parking, so were responsible for cleaning), and in our garage.

Just the tiny amount of “wind”, caused by the sweeping action of the broom, made them a hassle to sweep up, as they’d invariably dance merrily away from the dustpan.

But, seriously, thanks again to you, and the others that participated in this cleanup!
