West Seattle Halloween: Junction trick-or-treating, 2011 edition

(Lora Swift at Hotwire Coffee [WSB sponsor])
The sun is out in full force just in time to shine on West Seattle Junction trick-or-treaters. The annual tradition is on till 3 pm – just head for the heart of The Junction and start going from business to business. Many owners/employees are in costume too, like Hotwire’s Lora, above, and the Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) team:

The early bird gets the candy:

Nothing like a Halloween costume where you really and truly don’t get a hint at who’s inside (though the Invisible Man did reveal himself to our photographer as a longtime WSB’er):

Aaron was helping with the handouts outside Puerto Vallarta:

Of course you need a sneak peek to see how the loot looks:

And the best treat of the day – the sort-of-surprise sunshine!

More photos to come!

ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT: See those additional photos after the jump:

Winnie the Pooh was at Primp salon:

Dr. Bryan Wiebe from Fauntleroy Chiropractic (WSB sponsor) was chaperoning his kids:

Terjung’s House of Gifts was graced with angels:

Nostalgia was “in” at Shadowland:

Anné from TILA-RE-MAX was getting the word out about their “gently” haunted house:

Somebody spooky showed up at Hotwire:

Someone shiny, at Zamboanga:

A little bit costume, a little bit walking billboard at Great Harvest Bread:

Now, from Next to Nature (you can tell we took our pix in the early going – before long, it was wall-to-wall):

Thanks to FS for sharing a photo:

Admiral, Westwood Village and White Center trick-or-treat events are all on Monday; details here.

The REMAX Junction haunted house was awesome and the kids loved it! The place was packed and had a line a block long. Loud screams for a great job REMAX!

So glad to have 1 stop in our community for trick or treating, but it was crazy!! I love seeing all of our friends from the neighborhood. Any thoughts to managing the direction everyone goes? Perhaps go south when you are on the Easy Street side of the road and North when you are on the Cupcake Royale side of the street? Also- please don’t let our children choose candy…LOL, makes for long lines because choosing candy can be a tough job. Loved that the second hand store had little toys, my oldest chose a wind-up spider that he can use to scare the daylights out of me with in the future. LOVE West Seattle!

I saw the coolest costume while taking my kids around the junction today. Beaker! It was awesome. I hope someone had a chance to take a picture and will post it. West Seattle is so full of creative minds. I love West Seattle too Athena.

Took my 2.5 year old today. First year that she really gets Halloween. She loved it. Great costumes that I saw was a girl in a rainbow Goldfish bag. Totally handmade. Also there was a little guy, 2-3 year old as a sanitation worker pushing the smallest yard compost bin around,

I think I had more fun than my daughter, so many cute costumes!! It would be nice to have the flow of foot traffic all moving in the same direction though. It got wayyyy to crowded at times!

  • Susan October 29, 2011 (11:26 pm)

Thank you to all the merchants who participate in this. My daughter loves it and loves seeing all her friends from the entire community there. It’s such a small town joy.

It’s a very fun event. We really should consider closing the street next year and possibly turning it into even more of an event. Sidewalks were very crowded and people were forced into the street anyway.

  • AIDM October 30, 2011 (9:54 am)

This was an awesome event as usual. Thanks to the Juction businesses for planning such a fun event for the families of our community!

I would second Athena’s suggestion to make the sidewalk flow one way and would even encourage the Junction Association to close the streets for this event. This is one of the best Junction events and it really deserves having the street closed to incorporate all of the overflowing crowds. Thanks again guys.

GREAT EVENT AND WEATHER. Maybe next year we can actually close the street to traffic for two hours like we do many other events. I believe that it would cut down on the sidewalk crowding. Who knows, anything can happen :)

    Thanks West Seattle!!!

  • west seattle mom October 30, 2011 (5:37 pm)

I vote for seeing how the street can be closed. I’m sure it would take permits, etc but it is such a great event I think it could be beneficial for a lot of the businesses. (Especially if they incorporated sidewalk sales, etc.)

To the Mars Hill coloring book people, yes it’s a free country but stuffing a coloring book down my kid’s throat makes me sad (and mad!!)

A big thank you to all the businesses!! We had some happy kids on our hands.

  • Jack October 30, 2011 (6:11 pm)

Had a great time trick or treating HOWEVER quite upset that Mars Hill church was out in full force handing kids religious propaganda. It’s one thing to target adults but difficult to explain to a kid why they can’t have a coloring book. Hope I wasn’t alone in my irritation about this?

  • David October 30, 2011 (8:34 pm)

Please, please somehow close the streets for next year’s trick or treat. We do it for the car show with just a fraction of the attendance. Trick or treating has become so crowded, with everyone pushed together, it now endangers the kids being underfoot. I had to physically protect my two-year old from harm many times on Saturday. Eventually I had to pick her up and carry her.

  • West Seattle mom October 31, 2011 (1:06 am)

@ Jack – I totally agree about Mars Hill Church. Talk about poor taste. It’s an echoed sentiment too. A lot of the parents were talking about it at the WS soccer games today.

  • sam-c October 31, 2011 (9:55 am)

I think there were lots of calls for street closure following last year’s event too (and last year it was pouring). with the weather being so great, we opted to spend time at the playground instead of fighting the crowds on the sidewalks. I imagine the costs of the permits for street closure are too much for this sort of event.

Gotta say, We LOVED the haunted house at the real estate office – I think it was remax…. My kids thought the vampire was so awesome that we had to go back twice! They’ve been doing a haunted house for years and it’s always good but this was the best!

Sorry, comment time is over.
