West Seattle weekend scenes: Shipwreck, car washes, pancakes

The photo’s from Kendall, sent “live” a few hours ago from opening night at Shipwreck Tavern – he reported a capacity crowd — and wrote more about it at Washington Beer Blog. Hours earlier, Saturday morning, we stopped by all three high-school-fundraising car washes – all reporting a brisk business in the early going! – top to bottom in the next three photos, it’s Chief Sealth (check the fall colors in the background) at Boren, Seattle Lutheran at Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsor), and West Seattle High School at WSHS:

Last but not least, folks fueled up for a busy Saturday by starting the morning at Alki Lodge 152‘s pancake breakfast –

For a look ahead to what’s happening today, here’s the latest West Seattle Weekend Lineup.

we stopped in at the Shipwreck last night. It was so busy we had to turn right back around. Good for them! Looks like the neighborhood was looking for a new bar.

    I heard they don’t have the ‘ship’…sad.

Kara, the shipwreck is the former TNT, not the former Benbow. But as we understand it, the Benbow (with said “ship”) was gutted several years back.

We got a tip last night at the Shipwreck that the former Benbow is currently under renovation, and it will be a comfort food joint. I hope that is true.

Over at the old Benbow Inn, I remember that the ship had to be torn out to meet city code when it reopened as the Cajun place. May have been fire code?

I hope whomever bought the old ship set up from the Benbow will let the ShipWreck folks have a chance to buy it. That was something that should be in the community, not a private venue.

    Hey all,
Thank you to everyone who came out for the grand opening, you made our night.
Heres the official word on the old Benbow. Yes the ship is still there and the new owners have plans to fix it. And yes it will be a late night comfort food eatery called HEARTLAND. Thats the word folks.

    Thanks The Shipwreck

The Shipwreck Tavern – thanks for the info and congrats on a great opening night! Was only there Saturday night for about an hour (6:30 to 7:30), but was impressed with the beer, staff, and the general friendly community feeling of the place. I just have one suggestion (and I know this is nitpicking), but is there anything you can do about the lighting? We were sitting upstairs and those ceiling lights were so bright it felt like we were in a dental office or something. Maybe things are turned down later in the night when bands play, but even earlier in the night turning things down a bit would really help the overall ambiance IMHO. Other than that, great job and thanks for opening a great new bar in WS!

Sorry, comment time is over.
