Lint-trap fire sparks brief scare at Allstar Fitness

allstarscene.jpg

First word comes from Chris Monsos – it’s on the 911 log too. Adding a cameraphone photo in a moment. Not sure yet about details of the incident. 4:39 PM UPDATE: Added photo. Heading that way to find out more, now that the 39th/Holden drug raid is wrapped up (see previous post). Chris says whatever it was must have been small – nothing’s visible but he could smell smoke when he pulled up, and he sees the fire crew “squeegee-ing up water from the lobby.” 4:46 PM UPDATE: Our crew is there now – fire alarms can still be heard, and water can still be seen coming out of the lobby. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out what happened and whether it’s affecting club operations for the rest of today/tonight. 4:50 PM UPDATE: Two sources – the fire commander at the scene, and Cami from Alki (quoting the owner) – say it was a laundry-room fire; the commander says it started in the lint trap; out now, no injuries reported. Employees tell WSB the owner hasn’t decided how the rest of the night will go – first concern is getting people who were inside the club when this happened, back inside now to get their stuff. (Later note: Still no official word, so just call before you go.)

Oh man…. I got there at 5:30pm for my T.G.I.F. class with Loni to find fire trucks and members outside…. bummer deal…

    Glad everyone is ok!!

Still closed, perhaps for the night — cleaning crews are in there now.

You know, allstar is just getting gross, its just dirty. Things take forever to FIX! Owner, ya almost burned the place down, start cleaning the joint! Clean your DT club also! Would have loved a nice new club.

I always hear complaints about All-Star. Theres nothing “all star” about them! I used to work there and behind the scenes action aint pretty!

Why does this not surprise me? Have you seen the lack of care that the majority of the staff have there regarding keeping clean towels available to wipe down equipment? How about the molding carpets in the women’s locker room? Broken equipment and a general “who cares” attitude is completely apparent there these days. Maybe a good scare like this will wake them up a bit? Doubt it.

Well if anyone is looking for an alternative my wife and I are opening a new fitness club in the junction in just a few weeks. We are called ‘Snap Fitness’ and we’re located at Jefferson Square in the space formerly occupied by the veterinarian’s office (lower level, facing 42nd). And before I hear a comment about the parking lot there you should know we are offering free (validated) parking in the lower level garage, right next to the club.
We aren’t a big box club – we’re a back-to-the-basics, 24 hour, cardio and weights club and we will have brand new Cybex equipment. Just google Snap Fitness and you’ll find us.

    *End shameless plug here*

Don’t forget the YMCA’s at Fauntleroy and West Seattle. Clean, nice staff and updated equipment.

nice “plug”… Snap Fitness???? !!!!…. The staff and trainers at All Star are the best, ive never had a problem and look forward to going evry day and the owner cares very much about all concerns…and i have no what idea what “Bill” is talking about, the downtown club is gorgeous …. plus, the west seattle club just got all new equipment, what more do you want?!?!

All Star is still the nicest club in West Seattle. It may have some problems, as do all clubs, but for the price it is the best. And it has awesome instructors! :)

I have to also say ALL STAR has been a great club to be a member of. I was with the YMCA for over a decade before switching to ALL STAR. I’ve never seen it be anything but clean, the equipment is top notch, the staff is great. I hope all is repaired soon!

I was a member of All Star for a long time too, but was unimpressed with their child care and disappointed that their trainer staff was all about buying supplements and signing up for big packages. While the Y isn’t as fancy (I’d argue it’s cleaner and a heckuva a lot friendlier) it is super family focused and friendly. My children have a great time there and it’s a solid gym.

All Star is a “non sense” workout gym… love love love the woman only gym… the staff is nothing but friendly and whatever with people complaining about the “staff” not wiping down the equipment… what a bunch of “prince” and “princess”..isnt that YOUR job… the gym rocks, the instructors rock, trainers rock and its nothing but state of the art equipment, if you wann “make friends” yes, go to the Y!!! and anyways, wasnt this all about the mis fourtune of a FIRE!!! glad everyone is okay…..

I think you interpreted my comment incorrectly, Becka. Yes, it is the job of the patrons of the club (any club) to wipe down their equipment after use. My comment referred to AllStar not keeping up with providing the clean towels to do so. The staff isn’t there to clean up after us; but they are there to provide the materials for us to do so. It’s an increasing problem with more and more members and not enough staff resources to keep up with the need of the patrons. Furthermore, I think it IS the job of the trainers and/or other staff members to encourage the cleaning of equipment after use when working with clients. It rarely happens.

I get a great workout there every time I go. The ladies only section fits my needs perfectly, and the classes I’ve attended have been demanding and fun. Maybe my expectations are too low, but as an average priced gym (sad but true…) it’s providing the exact services I signed up for.

Back to the original topic, LINT TRAP FIRE!? That’s the stuff moms warn against and you never think will actually happen. Hopefully it wasn’t too big of a scare.

Sorry, comment time is over.
