JanSParticipantif you wait until you’re financially ready to have a child, there would be no children. Those teenagers? Educate them…make contraceptives available to them. And keep repeating it to them.
Is everything in your life measured by the almighty dollar, Hooper?

hooper1961MemberJanS – there would be children; the parents would be a bit older, wiser and have jobs! And contraceptives are available (dispensers exist at community centers)

oddrealityParticipantI would rather bail people out from having made bad decisions [have you never made a bad decision??] than have them dying on the streets or starving their children. Not everyone is as “capable” as you are it would seem.
Ah..so what you really hate is teenagers having sex.LOL I doubt that the situation you describe costs us taxpayers anywhere near the amount it costs us to blow people up around the world in the name of Democracy..Why does that not bother you??We all pay taxes for things we hate to pay taxes for. I know I do and those things are not the same as the things you hate to pay for.
Here is the thing. You cannot control peoples sexual urges. Really. You cannot. You can help people to do better, you can help the children conceived to have a better start to hopefully avoid the same pitfall. You can provide an excellent education so the kids want to do better and see a future. You can grow the economy so there are actual jobs available to go to.You can do a lot of things but you will never stop young people from having sex.You will not be able to regulate procreation unless you are for free abortion on every street corner.Even then, not everyone would want an abortion..how would you deal with that.Force them?
Many older people that you think should have children also cannot afford them. What if they have the money and think they are finally ready then have a child with birth defects that require lots of money to repair or to take care of for their life time? Then what??Then that older couple with resources fast becomes an older couple without any left for anything ..not even retirement. Then you would not want to help them to live late in life. They should just die I suppose after dedicating their resources to that child you allow them to have when they are old enough.
Are children to be yet another thing that is only for the richest among us??
Worrying about what other people are doing or not doing is not good for anyone. People don’t have to live according to your own personal rules. Those are for you to live by.You can deny that you think about what other people are doing but your obsessive broken record posting about other people proves otherwise.
As Scrooge would say…Bah humbug

hooper1961Memberoddreality – it is stupid for the US to send legions to other parts of the world and blow things up.
regarding procreation ADOPTION is a viable answer
December 28, 2012 at 7:47 pm #780769
oddrealityParticipantIf adoption were so viable then there would be no children looking for homes. Not everyone wants to adopt out their own child after all we do have feeling involved you know. What is to say the adopting parents will not lose their job and end up on the dole?Or they or the child they adopted develops a major illness that takes all their resources??
I’ve often wondered why all the people so against abortion do not have houses full of other peoples children, they seem to think that is the easy answer..it is not. They rarely adopt any themselves but think others should be doing it.

hooper1961Memberwhy do so many americans have to adopt children from overseas?
December 28, 2012 at 8:02 pm #780771
oddrealityParticipantBecause many times it is easier or faster to adopt abroad than here .Sometimes they think they are saving a child from a horrible situation [and that is generally true] sometimes not enough tiny babies here as most only want tiny newborns and those other older children are left languishing in foster homes.Or they do not want one less than perfect..no defects allowed you know!! Maybe they only want one that looks like their family or with a certain ethnic background and none available. Many reasons, more than I can think of off the top of my head, but not because there are no children here to adopt. We do not even have enough foster homes for all the children out there now. How many have you adopted?
Me either.
I had two of my own and that was all I wanted.
December 28, 2012 at 8:07 pm #780772
JoBParticipantfoster homes wouldn’t exist if there was a shortage of unwanted children hoop..
not only do they exist… many children spend their entire lives passing from one foster home to another.
that’s the reality.

HMC RichParticipantHooper, quite often people adopt is because they medically for some reason cannot have children themselves. Because of “open” adoptions domestically, many couples have waited to adopt a child once the birth mother has the baby. But many times the birth mother changes her mind and keeps the child. It is too painful a process to keep repeating. Adopting from overseas gives children an opportunity to live in a great country. To have an opportunity to grow and have a good future.
Adoption is great but there are many issues related to it. Your view is simplistic in my opinion. There are many foster children who need us. Once my wife and I work through the issues that affect our son, we will adopt a child domestically.
My issue with “open” adoptions is this. Many of the people who decide to allow their child to be given up for adoption, still have some parental rights. They may get to visit or be in touch with the child or children. Quite often the progress that the adoptive parent has made with the child gets disrupted by the bio parent that couldn’t take care of the child in the first place.
More people should adopt, BUT, they need to know the issues, problems, and where to go for extra help if they decide to adopt. Most kids that are fostered or are in an overseas orphanage have major trust and attachment issues. They were cheated out of a loving home and trust.
Young people make more mistakes generally. We can’t just discard them, but they also need to be responsible. Sadly the family unit is not what it used to be. Two “normal” parents are always better than one. Meaning that male female or same sex couples are better at raising kids generally than a single parent. Government should not just give handouts but they do need to help the children.
Look at it this way. A child who is raised properly is going to be a valued tax payer. That is all the government really wants.

hooper1961Memberrussia is banning foreign adoptions.
i think everyone would agree that a child raised properly in a two parent household with at least one full time worker is far more likely to succeed than a kid raised by a single parent teenager on the dole.
as a taxpayer the first option two parent household is an obvious choice
December 29, 2012 at 7:14 pm #780776
elikapekaParticipantHooper, your last sentence sums up the theme of everything you post here. “As a taxpayer.” You never address an issue as a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a neighbor, a friend, a church member, a co-worker, a community member. It’s all about you not paying for anything for anybody else. You worry about the price of everything, but know the value of nothing.
Furthermore, you spend a lot of time resenting people who are less fortunate than you, and yet you have your facts wrong. An individual’s level of debt does not qualify you for any type of public assistance. Qualification for those programs are based on income and assets and sometimes health conditions play a part too, such as in SS Disability.
May I suggest that you spend some time talking to some older people (born, say, in early 1930’s or earlier) and find out what it was like before there was any social safety net? Try reading something like “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclar. Read about the dustbowl. Timothy Eagan wrote an excellent book about the failures of both individuals and government there. Ken Burns did an excellent miniseries. You might learn a few things.
December 29, 2012 at 8:11 pm #780777
oddrealityParticipantHe does not want to learn, he already knows it all don’t you know.
Russia has every right to stop foreign adoptions bu not for the reason Putin is doing it..I personally believe we adopt way too many kids from other countries, lots of kids here to be adopted them first. I would hate to think had I ever had to put a child up for adoption it could end up a continent away.
Even though Russia is not like us it does not mean it is a terrible place to live and grow up.They have many orphanages, poorly run, most of the eastern block countries do.They have some real problems and they need to begin to work on the orphanages and care for the children but like here it is the economy that causes most of the kids to have to go there in the first place. They, like us, need more money for social services. Services that keep families together and services for the children that are put into orphanages. It takes money to run things,to run a country – pooled money – you know – tax dollars!!!! OMG…that sounds like socialism!!!
