The garbage under the bridge is an outrage! Every time I drive home via the low bridge it is worse than the time before. Yesterday I was driving west the whole length of Spokane St from beacon hill to WS and it was really telling to see how it the center, where many can see the area is nice and clean, even where it’s obvious people are living. Then you get to Marginal way and it becomes garbage hell.

This is not ok! Not for the people living there, not for the taxpayers, not for the health and wellbeing of that land. Please join me in taking pictures and posting them for all to see. Asking Ed Murray- is this what your front yard looks like Mr Mayor? It’s obvious since some areas are clean that they are choosing to ignore this area. I’m not asking for a solution to homelessness, just pick up the frikkin garbage! And people who don’t understand where all the garbage is coming from, imagine if everyone on your block had no garbage collection, what do you think it would look like as the weeks turned into months?

@Job: Agreed! If the city provided services to the area, it wouldn’t build up and would be a better situation for everyone. Those who call the area their temporary home and those of us who just view it from afar. Put in some dumpsters and WM come pick it up on the same weekly schedule you do for residential areas!

    it’s a simple solution
those who gripe about providing free garbage service for “those” people are making a much bigger problem for themselves… sooner or later the mess will have to be picked up and taxpayers will pick up the tab. it would be far more cost effective to do so on a regular basis and avoid the associated health risks we face now.

@JoB: ” it would be far more cost effective to do so on a regular basis and avoid the associated health risks we face now.”

Agreed! Far more effective and less expensive (on several metrics) to just take care of it in the present than clean up later.

Was just speaking to someone who works on Homeless issues for the City about this. There are plans in the works to engage SPU in trash pickups at these homeless areas. This person said she’s really hopeful about some of the plans that are being implemented. There were no specifics, but this was someone who has been working in the area of urban homelessness for a while, and she’s finally feeling heartened by upcoming programs.

TVB, thanks. I , at my age now, do think that it wouldn’t take much to make me one of “those people”. I cannot imagine how daunting it is to even live a simple life in a tent, if it could be called truly”simple”. This new tax money the city is asking for seems “good”, but the city isn’t doing the basics now. How could we possibly imagine all that new money being used for the right things? I, for one, can’t. The city seems to waste anything planned for helping homeless people with things like another million dollar study. Sad, really…

This a sincere question & not an argument for or against. I have yet to hear a good explanation for not just the quantity of trash but the “quality” of the trash. It seems to be coming from somewhere that sells in bulk. Furthermore, where do they get the exercise treadmills & numerous bikes with parts missing (like wheels & handlebars)? The encampment on Airport Way even has dumpsters but the trash doesn’t seem to make it in them. I’ve heard Mental Issues, protest… I want to make some sense of it. A few days ago, my partner & I were driving along when a male was urinating into the road toward the cars during rush hour right out in the open (TMI).

@ TheVelvetBulldog: That’s great to hear! I hope it moves forward and we get some kind of solution in place. It benefits everyone and is NOT an expensive plan. Just a few more “apartment complex” level hotspots to provide services for. Shouldn’t add any stress to the current waste program and if the “houseless” encampments have the option to have their waste removed regularly (maybe even provide a few dumpsters or a mix of “trash” and “recycling” bins?) I hope they will get it cleaned up and actively use the systems in place. Better for everyone.

22blades.. the trash you see comes from two sources.. those who buy for the homeless community often purchase in bulk… especially if they can find a central resident or group of residents who are willing to act as facilitators or meal preparers for a group.
the exercise equipment and bikes and bike parts come from our trash.. those things you see sitting by the side of the road…
As for the use of the trash receptacles at the camp on Meyer’s way… those receptacles are paid for by the camp and just like any other owner (such as the retirement village on the corner) they monitor who puts trash into their containers closely. you won’t find garbage inside the camp.
the problem is that there are no receptacles for the homeless who live in the woods on the other side of the street or for those who park along the street…
and then.. there are the individuals who would rather not pay for their own trash and figure adding it to that which is already there is a cheap and easy solution.

I don’t know if a portapotties would make a difference for the man urinating by the side of the road. they don’t seem to make much difference to the drunks in the junction :( people are people.

thanks for asking questions instead of just passing along assumptions. things are not always what they seem.

I am not making a blanket statement regarding these sights but some of the more irresponsible locations; in my case Airport Way (not Myers Way) near the stadiums where I believe the city is closing in on. As for the urinating, unfortunately, there was a bank of porta-potties & dumpsters a few hundred feet away.

As for the equipment, if I understand you correctly, I agree. We are generating SO MUCH CRAP in the way we “consume” “crap”. The on-line business model is straining the economy in so many ways. In Tokyo, the local ground delivery company is reaching dysfunctional levels due to the explosion of on-line retailing; everything from equipment upkeep to staffing & payrolls. Instead of shipping it off to Bangladesh where we can’t see it, it’s showing up in our neighborhoods.

There currently a court battle about the wayward trash between the state, city and jail system about picking it up. City and state want jail work crews to pick it up ( good option using community servers and jail work crews I think) Jail system against this. City cannot afford the cost at the moment, and state says if not on state land not their problem. Please do not toss people and groups who feed the homeless into the mix as someone did. In my experience these groups clean up after themselves, often leaving it better than it was. Here’s a thought, those people who are homeless could be given trash pick up bags, gloves and those pick up sweet things, get coupons to buy gtoceries and at end of day recieve coupons to eat free somewhere. Let’s start helping people remember how to look after themselves instead of dependency on others.
