Elizabeth SkalinskiMemberI am so sorry to inform you of former owner of Next to Nature Summer Diehm’s untimely passing this last Monday, she was in a tragic car accident and is leaving behind husband Patrick Diehm and their 2 son’s Josh 10 and Jack 8.
I know she had many friends, and touched many hearts in West Seattle.
There will be a memorial in Wenatchee on Saturday, if anyone would like more information please contact me through this forum.

mehud7ParticipantLiz, I will always remember Summer’s impish grin. My heart aches for Patrick, Josh, Jack, and her mother. They were such and incredibly sweet and loving little family. Please send me details of her memorial. Summer is one of several owners of NTN who have been so supportive of our rescued cats. Summer herself has rescued many an animal in her life, many pitbulls.

DBPMemberMy understanding is that Next to Nature is run as some kind of non-profit for the benefit of pet rescue programs. Is that correct?
I also understand that there are several people on this blog who either volunteer there or are connected with the business somehow. Right?

furryfacesParticipantLiz, thank you for letting our community know about Summer. She was a delightful, wonderful person and her family was everything to her.
Everyone, I found this site where you can post comments to Summer’s Family.

chmMemberLiz, thanks for keeping everyone in the loop.
What a tragedy and a loss for anyone who knew her.
According to the Wenatchee World, the memorial gathering is at Noon on Saturday at the Entiat Grange, 14108 Kinzel Street Entiat, WA 98822
(509) 784-1062. According to web directions that’s 165.2 mi, or 2 hr 53 min driving from here if anyone is interested (via I-90/Rte97 over Blewett Pass). Béa and I are hoping to make it and represent (current) NTN.
And…in response to DBP, no, NTN is not a non-profit although we do donate significant amounts of goods and funding (not to mention employee time and in-store space) to groups such as the West Seattle Food Bank, Friends of the Animals, Genevieve G Animal Advocacy, Homeward Pet, Feral Spay and Neueter Clinic, Rescue Every Dog, etc. Last year it was over $35K in material support.
It is fitting that Béa and I still have a black cat named Geordie whom we adopted from FAF at the NTN store in WS in 1998 when we were just customers there and Summer was the owner. Seems like just yesterday…
We will miss you Summer Diehm (Preston).

chmMemberMinor update….if anyone is sending flowers, I just dealt with very nice people at Apple Blossom Floral in E Wenatchee that are delivering to the Grange. They *might* reduce the delivery fee for other orders that can tag along…509-884-7838.
