Two more West Seattle coyote sightings

For those keeping track (we will crunch the sightings onto a map sometime soon): Debra reports two coyotes seen running across the 5200 block of Jacobsen (just uphill from Beach Drive) today; Mary Ellen reported one Sunday morning at Juneau/46th.

I saw a coyote sitting at the edge of the greenspace at 48th and Eddy, just north of Lincoln Park and just east of Beach Drive.

Meant to say that I saw it on Sunday morning about 11. My daughter and I then had a lengthy discussion about wild dogs and domesticated ones.

    If you’re missing a dog. . .

About 11:45 today (Sunday, 2/10) near Fauntleroy Park, we heard a group of coyotes killing a dog. It was not pleasant to hear, especially knowing there was nothing we could do to help. We know nothing more of the circumstances, i.e. kind of dog, etc., just that it was killed.

This is rather late, but I saw a coyote about a month ago down on alki. I’m bad with street names (I was about a block south of 7-11, I was driving past where that big old boat used to be that somehow got crashed to bits…), it was crossing the street oblivious to traffic. I was so surprised!

I was walking my cockapoo Myndi this morning around 11:00 AM and saw a transient looking guy walking ahead of me from the South side park entrance. After going through my little route with Myndi I came to the bigger creek bridge near Barton St side of park and saw the transient guy again but he was stopped and said he saw a coyote. I asked where and he pointed toward the wooden walkway just north of the creek bridge. Sure enough, there was a healthy looking coyote about 20 yards away in the middle of the wood slatted path just sitting up looking at us… I starting walking his way with Myndi on leash and then yelled to see what he would do… I was testing to see if he’d respond to my approach or boldly hold his ground. He immediately darted in to the bushes just off the path but I could still see him. I’ve talked to several other people in the park recently who say they’ve witnessed several coyote sightings and one person said they saw 3 coyote together.

3 coyotes about 8am this morning in my yard. Hemlock way and 45th. Just up Rose from Fauntleroy. One was the size of a big dog. I saw it first, I yelled and it didn’t seem to care. Two smaller ones were running through my yard and adjoining neighbors. They were running around for a good 20 minutes.

About 18th March we were woken up by a coyote in the early hours trying our window. We watched it heading north along California (we’re at California & Portland) until it dissapeared out of sight. Out of interest, we went through the same issue back home years ago with foxes being pushed out of the countryside and now having a stabilised urban population. This should be useful to anyone wanting prevention, deterent, etc. advice or just background information – http://www.thefoxwebsite.org/ – obviously a slightly smaller predator, but I’m sure a lot of the information will be transferable

Tuesday April 2, 4PM on the woods trail directly off the upper parking lot at Lincoln Park, just south of the ball field, came around a muddy corner of the trail with my 85# Golden and face-to-face with large coyote, 25 ft away. In 14 years of living in the neighborhood, with many different dogs, visiting the park at least once a week, I’d never experienced anything like it. The coyote was curious, brazen even. Didn’t budge when I started yelling and whooping. As I backed up, it moved forward. I picked up a good sized fallen branch and starting waving it around til I got to a clearing large enough to turn and sprint out of there. With all of these sightings and postings, why is nothing being done?

There was a coyote seen in the afternoon June 4th at 8600 block of Fauntlee Crest SW. A cat was killed by a coyote June 8th at 41st and SW Donovan. The coyote returned later in the afternoon to the same yard for the cats remains.

I was quite surprised to encounter a coyote at Murray Ave and Lincoln Park Way SW this morning. He ran into the bushes that lead to the ravine at that corner. I heard the news report on KING tonight and thought that I would post it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
